These two sites demonstrate the growth of free- dom of expression and the unregulated aspects of the Internet. They also emphasise that the Inter- net and WWW will have a significant effect on the profession. The first is the ‘Which Veterinary Surgery’ Web site. The origin of this site is unknown, but it claims to be a public service page. The origin- ators intend to publish a full list of all veterinary practices in the UK, displaying those that have been recommended to them by ‘animal owners’. The criteria which is used for recommendation is unknown. In addition, the on-line site requests information about, for example, the principal of the practice and the name of the veterinary sur- geon involved, which contradicts the statement indicating that no information will be stored. We have received an e-mail from a veterinary surgeon, upset that her personal address and tele- phone number are listed in the directory as a practice. Perhaps there are other errors that other colleagues could find. The second is the ‘Council of Docked Breeds’ Web site, which claims that only a minority of vets are still anti-docking. To quote from their pages: ‘The anti-docking, anti-dew claw removal, anti-breeder hysteria.. . is spread by a minority of the veterinary profession.’ Currently, the site is actively canvassing support to prevent the spread of this apparent ‘hysteria’ to vets in other coun- tries, especially those in the USA. These sites are not part of the Vet Web, but they can be accessed from links within the Latest News page. Those wishing to view the site can find Vet Web at the Internet WWW address of http://www.vetweb.co.uk We will be keeping the profession informed of any further developments.
