SKIP - Upin & Ipin is a Malaysian television series of animated shorts produced by Les' Copaque Production. - Features the life and adventures of the eponymous twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian kampong. - Introduced on TV9 in 13 September 2007 as a sixepisode Ramadan and Eid special, to instil significance of the Islamic holy month amongst children. Background Background - Upin & Ipin are five-year-old Malay twins who live with their elder sister Ros and maternal grandmother Opah in a wooden house in Kampung Durian Runtuh. - They have lost their parents in their infancy. Background - Upin and Ipin study in the village's Tadika Mesra (Friendly Kindergarten), where they befriend a varied bunch of classmates, including the polite and right-thinking Mei Mei, a funny and poetic Jarjit Singh, the firm but clumsy and short-tempered Ehsan, an easygoing and sarcastic Fizi, and an innovative and particular Mail. Background - The headman of Kampung Durian Runtuh is Isnin bin Khamis, better known as Tok Dalang, the wayang kulit champion. Tok Dalang keeps a cluster of rambutan trees for commercial purposes, and a rooster named Rambo. Background - Among the village's other notable residents are Muthu, owner of the village's only food stall who lives with his animal whisperer son Rajoo and pet steer Sapy. - Salleh (Sally), a waspish transgender-apparent, who owns a mobile library and Ah Tong, a strident-voiced vegetable farmer. - The elder twin brother of Ipin though only by 5 minutes. - The more outspoken one and usually is the mastermind behind the cheeky antics the twin do. - Distinguished by a twirl of hair on his head and the big U on his yellow T-shirt. - The younger twin brother of Upin and is the more cheerful one. - Smarter than Upin especially in Mathematics. - He has a habit of agreeing with statements by saying “Betul, betul, betul” or any other 3 words with the same intonation. - Obsessed with fried chicken . - The elder sister of Upin and Ipin. - Fierce but is actually a loving gentle sister . - Loves to tease her brothers when the opportunity arises. - Grandmother of Upin, Ipin and Ros. - Kind and gentle-hearted, and tends to spoil the twins. - She is a fountain of worldly and religious wisdom. -The class rep of the gang and tends to be quite bossy in that sense. - Love to be the judge in their games wears a little red ribbon to prove it. - Ehsan is quite a miser, not letting anyone borrow any of his stuff. - Fizi is Ehsan’s best friend and follows him wherever. - He is usually bossed around by Ehsan and tends to be the victim of the whole group. - Fizi have a habit of teasing Ehsan by calling him his pet name “Intan Payung” which annoys him every time. - Young boy with a booming adult-like voice. - Always tries to join games but somehow always gets left out. - Love to give out personally crafted riddles making jokes at the same time. - Mail is love to try to sell anything he can with his “Dua Seringgit” trademark deal. - Mail is usually more laidback and loves to tease the other kids. - Tok Dalang is the champion of the shadow puppet competition hence his name. - He is known as Atok. - He is notorious for being a miser but because he stays alone, he has a soft spot for the kids and will help them whenever he can. - Mei-Mei is a cute, good mannered girl and studying hard in school. - She often acts as the voice of reason amongst her peers. - She can get quite bossy when her friends don’t cooperate. - Part-time librarian for the mobile librarian in Kampung Durian Runtuh. - He has his textile shop where most of the villagers go to tailor their clothing. - Quite hot tempered nevertheless will still lend a helping hand to anyone in the village. Season 1 (2007) - Upin & Ipin was aired on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 19:00 in conjunction with Ramadan and Aidilfitri, which tells of the twins Upin and Ipin on their first fasting months. - End with two final episodes premiering on Hari Raya itself. Season 2 (2008) -The second series, under its full title Upin & Ipin: Setahun Kemudian, went on air in conjunction with Ramadan again with 12 new episodes. - This season was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive Malaysia via its Colgate Kayu Sugi toothpaste. Season 3 (2009) - Under the new full title Upin & Ipin dan Kawan-Kawan, premiered on 9 February 2009, with each episode lasting up to seven minutes. - In the year-end school break season, it became apparent that new episodes are strategically debuted on school holidays. - This is also the first season of Upin & Ipin for the international market, airing on Disney Channel Asia beginning 1 November . Season 4 (2010) - Debuted 15 March 2010 with a brand new opening sequence and color pencil and exercise book-themed title card. -The main focus on this season is as a tribute to sports. Season 5 (2011) - Debuted on the 12 March 2011. With previous seasons it opens with a new sequence, now based on a paper craft theme. Reception and Influence Reception and Influence - While season two was on air, it was reportedly watched by 1.5 million on TV9 making it the second most-watched animated series on all of Malaysian television, right behind Doraemon (1.6 million), yet ahead of SpongeBob Square Pants(800,000). Reception and Influence - The popularity of Upin & Ipin could have attributed to the commercial success of Malaysia's first CGI-animated feature film. Geng: The Adventures Begin , propelling it into the RM 6.31 million mark throughout its seven-week run in Malaysian cinemas as one of the highest-grossing Malaysian language films in history. Reception and Influence - As the third season reaches its conclusion in late 2009, TV9 reports that Upin & Ipin was viewed by 1.6 million, just behind the free television premiere of Geng which was watched by 2.45 million. Comics - Since 1 November 2009, Upin & Ipin have been adapted into a monthly comic magazine series, titled ‘Majalah Komik Upin & Ipin’ to be circulated all over Malaysia and Brunei, published by Media Prima.
