The accident, involving a white Ford Ban- tam, occurred last Wednesday 23 October along the R102. Kuils River police said they were alerted to the accident at about 22:30. The driver of the bakkie, 26-year-old Jody Johnson from Kuils River, allegedly lost control of his vehicle before swerving across themiddle paving and slamming into a tree, after which he ploughed through a vibracre- te wall and ended up in a resident’s backy- ard. The vehicle nearly landed in a swimming pool. Homeowner Leon Habelgaarn told Tyger- Burger last week that the driver allegedly had an asthma attack. “Hewas at his cousin’s house in Eerste Ri- ver where he apparently told them that he had a funny feeling in his chest,” Habel- gaarn said. Jody then left for Kuils River. “My wife and I were watching television and my daughter was in the study. “My daughter told me she was actually waiting for the vehicle to slam through the room, that is how loud it sounded outside.” Describing the horrific crash, he said all he heardwas a rumbling noise and the noise of stones rolling on top of the roof. Parts of the bakkie landed next to the hou- se. During a visit to the house on Thursday, pieces of the broken vibracrete wall were ly- ing strewn across the backyard and parts of the bakkie were also still lying around. Habelgaarn, who’s family was still in shock following thenight’s incident, saidhis wife and daughter were screaming and shouting when they saw what had hap- pened. “I had to calm them down.” He is, however, thankful none of his fami- ly members got hurt. Jody was treated by emergency personnel from the ER24 ambulance, EMS Ambulance Services and the fire services before being transported to the Kuils River Netcare 911 Hospital. Since the accident, messages of encour- agement have been streaming in on Jody’s Facebook profile. The Ford Bantam driven by Kuils River motorist Jody Johnson ploughed through the boundary wall of a house in Rustdal last week, leaving the occupant in a critical condition. The driver is still being treated in hospital for injuries to his head, arm and hips. The road, which connects Delft, Mfuleni, Blue Downs, Blackheath, Kleinvlei and Eer- ste River, should be on top of the city’s prio- rity list, said ward councillor Wilma Brady. Brady, councillor for ward 17, said the ro- ad has been on the city’s plans for an upgra- de for years, but nothing has yet happened. Dennis de Villiers, a representative from the department of roads and transport, said the department has started looking at Hind- le Road andhas also started preparing an ap- plication for funding for the construction of adual carriage-way stretching fromtheR300 to Eerste River Way. De Villiers said councillors now need to meet to discuss the way forward. “An EIA will of course have to be done,” De Villiers said. However, he indicated only a portion of the road is being considered. “What about the Hindle Road continuing to the Eerste River Day Hospital, because there is a continuation of the road?” asked Brady. “This has been a priority since 1998, it has been going on for many years and there has beennoprogress. The road is becomingbusy and there is going to be development along the road soon, what is going to happen to the road?” De Villiers said he is aware of previous discussions regarding funding for Hindle Road stretching from Raymond Ackerman to Forest Drive, but said there was not a lot of development to support the renovation of such a road soon. Asked to comment further on the planned upgrades, mayco member for transport, Brett Herron said sections of Hindle Road must be rehabilitated and“this is beingdone as, and when maintenance funds become available”. “Furthermore, a section of Hindle Road will have to be turned into a dual carriage- way.At this stage the city is considering con- ceptual layouts, but still has to secure fun- ding before we can appoint a consulting en- gineer.” He also said the section ofHindleRoadbet- ween Blue Downs Way and Melton Road must be constructed and, in this case too, the city is considering conceptual layouts but has to secure funding before appointing an engineer. The meeting – part of the Western Cape Department of Community Safety’s Provin- cial Policing Needs and Priorities (PNP) consultation process – was held at the Van Riebeeck Hall on Tuesday. Themeetingwas part of the department’s public engagements across the province with a wide range of interest groups about the communities specific policing con- cerns, as well as the public’s needs and pri- orities in order to help create safer commu- nities. “The latest figures provided to my office show that we still have very hard work to do together. On average, there are between 45 and 55 murders occurring in the prov- ince and about 95 rapes are reported each week,” said community safety MEC Dan Plato. Motivations for crime “Ladies and gentlemen, 13 people are be- ing raped every day in the Western Cape – this need to stop,” said Plato. Referring to last year’s PNP report, Plato said the main causes of crime in the Kuils River cluster is substance abuse, unemploy- ment and gangsterism. The perceived motivators of crime have been identified as unemployment, sub- stance abuse and poverty, he said. “When it comes to the opportunities for crime to occur, the identified factors in- clude a lack enforcement of the lawandpoor street lighting. “The top crimes for the Kuils River clus- ter were identified last year as house bur- glary, robbery, gangsterism and substance abuse,” Plato said. However, cluster commander Brigadier Vincent Beaton said murder and attempted murder is at the top of their list. “Gang related crime is also a big problem and a huge concern to which these crimes (murder and attemptedmurder) can be con- tributed to. Beaton said the area has a population of 285 000, of which 45% are unemployed. Members of the public were given the op- portunity to highlight their grievances. Joseph Adams, Mfuleni CPF member, complained about a lack of policing resourc- es in crime ridden Wesbank. “My concern is that there is not a closer contact point. Why can’t we have a satellite station in the area?” he asked. He also requested that police deploymore personnel to schools in their area. Fellow Wesbank resident and CPF mem- ber Edith van Wyk said she was concerned about thenumberof firearms in the commu- nity. Referring to an R5 rifle confiscated by the police recently, van Wyk said they’d heard the police sometimes supply gangs with these firearms. Participation “These weapons are only available to the police and army.” Julie deBruyn, a fellowCPFmemberwho lost her son due to gang violence, encour- aged community members to participate in block patrols over weekends. “What are we doing as a community to help youngsters?” she wanted to know. Alton Payne, chairman of the Kuils River CPF, agreed. “We have lots of people point- ing fingers at the police. Let us as the com- munity inKuilsRiver takehandsandcreate solutions. Take up our roles, stand up and be part of the solution,” Payne said. A report will be submitted to the national minister of police and the minister and members of the executive council at the end of the consultation process. The suspect kidnapped the 25-year-old victim after apparently finding out that the man had an affair with his girlfriend. According to the Mfuleni police, the sus- pect demanded a ransom from the victim’s family, which hewas planning to use to pay his lobola. Captain Nomathemba Muavha, spokes- person for the Mfuleni police, said the poli- ce were made aware of the kidnapping on Monday 20 October when the victim’s bro- ther reported the matter. “A Somali national opened a case of kid- napping after receiving a call from the sus- pect demanding ransom money of R20 000 for the release of his brother,” Muavha said. She said thevictimwaskidnapped inPar- liament Street in the Bardale Informal Set- tlement when he got out of a taxi. “The suspect instructed the brother to firstmeet him at theMfuleni taxi rankwith the cash and warned him not to involve the police,” Muavha explained. The suspect then called again and chan- ged the location to the Engen service stati- on situated along Hindle Road as the drop- off point. With this information, theMfuleni police called for the assistance of the police pro- vincial specialized units, which include hostage negotiators and the technical sup- port unit. The suspect’s cell phone was traced, which led the police to Khayelitsha. “That is where the victim was found.” The 32-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in court on charges of kidnap- ping. “Apparently thevictimhadanaffairwith the prospective wife of the suspect and the suspect was allegedly demanding “lobola” when he learnt of the affair,” Muavha said. The launch which was held on Wednes- day, saw the department of education relea- se its Abuse No More protocol document – a guideline which will be distributed to schools and aid teachers with managing children who have, or still suffer, abuse. The guidelines, according to the depart- ment, were first introduced in 2001. Howe- ver, since then, various developments rela- ting to the care and protection of children culminated in the update of legislation. “The guidelines have recently been amen- ded in consultation and collaboration with a number of government departments, the police, NPA, and various other organisati- ons and institutions, taking into account all relevant legislation,” spokesperson Jessica Shelver said. Educators’ responsibility The amended legislation, she said, highlights the responsibility of educators who may suspect or deal with disclosures of child abuse and sexual offences against children, and the educators’ mandatory du- ty to report such incidents in the prescribed manner. Speaking at the launch, Debbie Schäfer, Western Cape minister of education, said it is an unfortunate reality that each day, the safety and well-being of many children across South Africa is threatened by child abuse and neglect. “Intervening effectively in the lives of the- se children and their families is not the sole responsibility of any single agencyorprofes- sional group, but rather is a shared commu- nity concern. Educators have a special role to play in dealing with this problem, along with doctors, nurses and social workers. In fact, people in theseprofessions are required by law to respond to signs of child abuse,” Schäfer said. She said child abuse, deliberate neglect and sexual offences against children are se- rious challenges that currently exist in com- munities and educational institutions throughout South Africa. “Because of the high prevalence, this protocol has been de- veloped to help institutions, employees and learners of the Western Cape education de- partment deal with the problem in the most efficient and effective way.” Impact of child abuse At the launch, Sura Swart, a school social workerwhohelpedwith amending the docu- ment, spoke on the impact of child abuse, de- liberate neglect and sexual offences against children on the curriculum. She described three types of abuse: phys- ical, sexual and emotional abuse. “Children exposed to domestic violence can also be se- en as victims of abuse,” Swart said. She said the impact of child abuse and ne- glect are often discussed in terms of societal, behavioural and physical consequences, which in turn could lead to psychological consequences. This, she said, can also lead to alcohol abuse. “Childrenwhoarevictimsof abuse cande- velop hostility towards friends.” She said children suffering abuse can also have difficulty concentrating in class, strug- gle academically and drop out of school. “The seriousness canhowever be lessened with the support of teachers. It is free of charge and all one has to pay are the Sheriff’s fees. One does not need a lawyer, says John Jeffrey, deputy minister of justice and con- stitutional development in response to an announcement that three new small claims courts were established in Bellville, Good- wood and Kuils River in October. Jeffrey explained the workings of the small claims court to TygerBurger. “The plaintiff (the person claiming) must prove that the defendant has done some- thing that makes him or her liable for dam- ages,” he says. Examples would be that the defendant has failed to pay rent, caused an accident resulting in damage to the plaintiff’s prop- erty or ordered and received goods without paying for them. Other claims may relate tomoney lent, movable or immovable prop- erty, occupation of a property, mortgage bonds, promissory notes and credit agree- ments. Proceedings in the Small Claims Courts are conducted informally by a presiding of- ficer known as the commissioner, who en- deavours to ascertain the facts by question- ing the parties, weighing the evidence and arriving at a decision bearing in mind the applicable law. “It is important to note that judgments handed down by a commissioner in a Small ClaimsCourt are binding, whichmeans the judgment is valid in the Magistrates’ Court and that a warrant of execution can be is- sued by the Magistrates’ Court if the judge- ment is not complied with. The order is fi- nal andnormallyno appeal is possible,” Jef- frey says. There are currently 32 Small Claims Courts in the Western Cape and only 12 more are required in order to ensure that every magisterial district in the province has its own Small Claims Court. Beaton described malls as a hot spot for armed robbers. “We will do more patrols here. We will also do high visibility patrols, conduct stop and searches and ensure the safety of citizens in this cluster during the festive season.” Zevenwacht Mall has been targeted four times by armed robbers this year. AltechAutopage,MTN andGame family store have been robbed of huge amounts of cash. The police recently confirmed that only one suspect has been arrested. On Friday Beaton said police will patrol malls in the cluster on a regular basis. “All of the malls have been identified and we will ensure high visibility in and around them. We also have meetings with mall management to ensure good cooperation.” The parade on Friday was part of the po- lice’s Safer Festive Season launch. I informed Rally Motors’ manager Denise and also gave them the cost of the repairs on the vehicle. They do not want to take any responsibility for reimbursing me because “it is not their fault that their employees make mistakes”. I no longer use the service station because of their poor service and lack of integrity. However, I am both an English and Life Orientation teacher. Part of the Life Orien- tation syllabus is to teach religion, so it is my job to teach religion. This week, one of my Grade 11 Muslim students came to [speak to] my Grade 10 Life Orientation about Islam; and a past pupil also spoke on Buddhism. Deon is al sedert 2006 deel van die plaasli- ke musieklandskap. Musiekliefhebbers sal sy stem herken van die rockgroep Glaskas, asook die popgroep Dans Dans Lisa, wat hy saam met Bouwer Bosch gestig het. Maar die tyd is nou reg vir Deon om ’n so- lo-loopbaan te verken. “Ekdinkas ’nmens in ’nkreatieweberoep is, is jy altyd op soek na iets nuuts,” sê hy. Deonvoegbydat dit nie is omdathyverveeld was nie, maar dat dit lekker is vir hom om nuwe uitdagings aan te pak waarin hy ’n an- der deel van sy persoonlikheid kan uitleef. Deon het onlangs sy solo-EP,Die Slaapka- mer-Sessies, uitgebring en sê die naam ont- lok nogal vreemde reaksies van mense wat nie seker iswathydaarmeebedoel nie,maar dit was deel van die idee. Idee interesseer “Ekwil juis hê dit moetmense interesseer en hulle intrek in die hele idee,” verduidelik hy. Die Slaapkamer-Sessies is in 2013 gebore toe Deon elke week vir 10 weke lank ’n nuwe liedjie geskryf het, wat hy toe in slaapka- mers opgevoer het. Hy sê hy skryf meeste van sy liedjies in ’n slaapkamerwat vir hom ’n intieme spasie is en waar niemand hom pla nie. Hy het be- sluit om sy intieme spasie met die res van diewêreld te deel deur dié liedjies opYouTu- be te sit. “Ek stel myself regtig bloot en dit is die aard van die musiek,” sê Deon. Die liedjies handel oor onderwerpe soos geloof, liefde en menswees, wat vir Deon baie na aan die hart lê. Aanvanklik het hy nie geweet wat hy met die liedjies gaan maak nie en sê hy was skrikkerig om die video’s op YouTube te sit, want hywas nie seker ofmense daarvan sou hou nie. Deon sê hy’s dankbaar oor die positiewe terugvoer wat hy ontvang het en party aan- hangers het selfs vir nog gevra. Hy wou al tien liedjies opneem, maar dit sou bietjie duur uitgewerk het. Hy het uiteindelik vyf van die liedjies in ’n ateljee opgeneem. Vreemd Deonsê aangesienmusiekdeesdaeoral be- skikbaar is, is dit in elk geval vreemd om ’n hele album aan te pak. Deon is tans besig om die EP reg oor die land bekend te stel en het onlangs die eerste musiekvideo vir dié EP geskiet. Hy ondersoek nuwe intieme spasies om Die Slaapkamer-Sessies in aan te bied, maar hy gaan ookvandie slaapkamerna die sitka- mer toe beweeg en sal konserte in mense se huise aanbied. Intussen tree hy nog saammet Glaskas en Dans Dans Lisa op en hoewel die groepe nog niebesig ismetnuwemateriaal nie, sal hulle binnekort moet herbesin om dinge vir hulle en die luisteraars interessant te hou. A once-a-day pill taken by gay men to pre- vent infection by asmuch as 99%, and a topi- cal gel women can place in their vagina to achieve a 39% reduction in the risk of HIV infection, are only two of the new products that could help end the epidemic by 2030 – a goal establishedby theUnitedNationsPro- gramme on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS) earlier this year. Latest advances Ahead of anAids research conference (Re- search for Prevention) to be held in Cape Town this week, New York-based advocacy group Avac hosted a media workshop to in- form local journalists of the latest advances in the fight against HIV. Dr Katherine Gill, a principal researcher from the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, questions the current validity of the 1980s HIV prevention theme of ABC (Abstain, Be faithful, Condomise). She posed the question to delegates at the workshop: “Does everybody practise safe sex every single time? Does ABC really work, if taken into account that in 2012, 2.3 million people were infected with HIV and 50 women are infected every hour, worldwi- de”. She believes the current research conduc- ted in the field of preventative medicine holds the key to the real reduction of the glo- bal infection rate. In medical lingo it is referred to as pre-ex- posure prophylaxis, or PrEp. Commercially, it goes by the name of Truvado, a preventati- ve drug already approved by the United Sta- tes Food and Drug Administration for use by high risk groups such as gay men. In South Africa, however, the pill is only available on an open label basis, meaning that it has not been licensed by the SouthAf- rican Medicines Council yet, but can be ob- tained on prescription. The drug, which can prevent infection by 99%, costs R375 for a month’s supply. The South African Medicines Council says it needs more research data before it can approve the drug, but local Aids advoca- te Brian Kanyemba, also from the Desmond Tutu Foundation says otherwise. Dragging its heels “Many clinical studies worldwide, inclu- ding one held in Cape Town a few years ago, have shown that this drugworks, but yet the South African government is dragging its heelswhen it comes to the licensing and roll- out of a drug that can save an untold number of lives,” he says. In essence, the drug is a combination of two of the three anti-retrovirals used in tre- atment programmes. Atripla, the anti-retroviral drug currently used for treatment in South-Africa, consists of Tenofivir, 3TC and Efavirens, whereas Truvodo contains only Tenofivir and 3TC. Some current concerns around the use of this drug, according to Gill, is the risk of re- sistancebuild-up, as in the casewithantibio- tics if not used regularly and without medi- cal supervision. “If not taken every day and the levels of medication drops, the HI-virus could beco- me resistant to the drug. And as is the case with any ARV treatment, drug toxicity is a concern and there is a lot of nervousness about prescribing the drug to a patient and letting them go,” she says. It is advisable for high-risk groups such as sex workers, intra-venal drug users and gaymen ormen having sex withmen, to use this drug on condition that it is supervised by a medical practitioner, says Kanyemba. Another talking point is that the roll-out of this drug could increase risky sexual be- haviour. But Kanyemba says recent research in Melbourne indicates this is not the case. “High risk sexual behaviour will remain high-risk sexual behaviour, with or without the use of the drug,” he says. Gill says the riskiest sex still remains anal receptive intercourse, but that risk behavi- our is subjective dependingonmany factors. “This could, for instance, include the net- work of people youmove around or the level of safe sex you practise. The onus remains on the individual to determine their own risk level,” she says.Ongoing research in France is investigating the possibility of using Truvado as a sort of “evening before andmorning after pill”, to be used only befo- re and after sex, as a preventative measure. Reducing infection risk The outcome of clinical trials undertaken by Gill to determine the efficacy of Microbi- cides, a gel traced with Tenofivir, to be used at the entry point of the HI-virus, is eagerly awaited. Results are expected next year. “This study,which started in 2011 (FACTS 001) aims to confirm the results of a study done in 2010 (CAPRISA 004), that indicated use of this gel reduced women’s risk of HIV infection via vaginal sex by 40%,” says Gill. It was the first time that the use of a vagi- nal gel has indicatedHIVprevention and the outcome of FACTS 001 is of global importan- ce – but more so in South Africa, where ma- ny women, even those in monogamous rela- tionships, become infected with HIV. If the trial confirms CAPRISA 004 results, the next step would be to present the data to regulatory authorities for possible pro- duct licensure and access. Engineering operations manager Randall Cable said 155 km of freeway were monito- red round the clock. He said Sanral’s key concern was the ex- pected increase in pedestrian fatalities with the approach of the festive season. Cable and his team have a mini version of the much larger electronic hub where po- lice, metro police, law enforcement and other Sanral operatives are stationed tomo- nitor cameras around the city. The freeway management system’s – with its core operations at the TransportManage- mentCentre inGoodwood – results onpedes- trian behaviour were shocking. One key deterrent seemed to be the very expensive hi-tech fencing used in themiddle of certain freeways. This cost Sanral R100 000 per 100m, Cable said. He said hotspots for pedestrian activity and fatalities included the R300 freeway bet- ween the N1 and N2 along Kuils River, the N2 between Khayelitsha and Vanguard Drive, the N1 near Okavango Boulevard (ne- ar CapeGate), the T2 Arterial Road near So- merset West and the N7 at Du Noon. Cable says the thermal video technology has also allowed them to virtually eradicate the placing of bricks along the N2 (to cause accidents), as the technology allows them to see human figures approaching the freeway. “This means the response time for police to act on any wrong-doing has been drasti- cally shortened.” Cable expected pedestrian fatalities to re- ach record numbers over the festive season. Currently research showed a marked in- crease in pedestrian collisions “especially on Fridays – during peak hours in the mor- ning between 06:00 and 08:00, and again in the afternoons,” Cable said. “This is understandable, because people cross at the point nearest their destination.” But he said it was unsettling that collisions happened at the same rate on Saturdays and Sundays. Kayla made her debut in the Access Auto Mini Class on the Engen Oval at Killarney during theCapeHell Drivers 2013/2014 Sum- mer Championship and although initially nervous, she soon settled in. Somuch so that despite it being her rookie year she benefitted from the advice offered by national VW Polo champion Kosie Wey- ers and got faster and faster before taking the lead in the title chase as the season drew to a close. Then came the ultimate heartbreak when shedroppedback to secondaftermechanical problems during the penultimate meeting led to her being forced to retire. This season promises to be different. She has joined Daniella de Sousa, a friend from primary school, to form the Vamos Ra- cing Team. After the joy ofwinning the opening round at Killarney on her birthday, she had her first “away” event at Bredasdorp. And that was where the fledgling Vamos Racing claimed theMini Challenge andwith it Kayla also received her first share of any prize money. Undeterred by a second place in the most recent Killarney championship round, she confidently believes she will be able to regain the lead at the next meeting on November 1. Plans for the future include trying her hand at the senior leagues. After that, who knows? So far the only wo- man to have ever won a Formula 1 race was South Africa’s Desire Wilson. She was first across the line in a British Aurora Championship event at Brands Hatch in 1980. The track organizers were so impressed by her feat they named a grandstand after her. Die organiseerders verwag ongeveer 60 Wes- en Suid-Kaapse skole, asook WP-atle- tiekklubs, wat ’n verskeidenheid streke, gemeenskappe en kulture sal weerspieël. Atlete wat ten minste 90 minute voor die aanvang van hul spesifieke item opdaag, kan in die BBP-kamer van die stadion aan- meld om in te skryf, het die atletiekklub ge- sê. “Vanjaar gaan ons nie vooraf inskry- wings doen nie, maar wel vir die atlete die geleentheid skep om hulself in te skryf,” het Gert Engelbrecht, klubvoorsitter, gesê. “Met die aanbieding van die byeenkoms probeer die Bellville-atletiekklub om in ’n noodsaaklike behoefte te voorsien wat dié tyd van die jaar in die Wes-Kaap bestaan, naamlik om ’n geleentheid te skep vir top- gehalte skool- en junior atlete om op hoë vlak teen mekaar mee te ding.” Sodra atlete geregistreer is, moet hulle “stiptelik” 30 minute voor hul item by die hoofbeampte vir daardie item aanmeld. Deelname aan al die items sal geskied volgens die hoogtes, gewig, toerusting en gooi-apparate soos op die amptelike pro- gram aangedui, onderhewig aan die stan- daardbepalings vir die onderskeie ouder- domsgroepe. “In die naellope en hekkies moet atlete hul eie wegspringblokke gebruik. Dis be- langrik om te weet dat die spykers van die skoene in dié blokke 12 mm of langer moet wees,” sê Gert. Rayno Snyman, atletiekkoördineerder van die Hoërskool D.F. Malan, sê atlete sal by die hek betaal en moet streng by die vooraf-reëling van 90 minute hou. Hy sê leerders van so ver as Namibië kom om deel te neem. C elebrities such as Elvis Blue and sports stars such as Toks van der Lin- de joined 100 of South Africa’s most passionate amateur golfers in support of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge National Fi- nal played at Sun City on 20-21 October. One of the longest running sponsorships in the history of South African sport cele- brated its 22nd anniversary this year with a tournament played over 36 holes on both theGary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Club courses. The tournament teed off on Monday 20 October as the culminationof anationwide series that began in March with club com- petitions, and then regional competitions to determine the qualifying golfers. Making a difference It’s the biggest charity golf tournament in South Africa, with 438 golf clubs and 35 268 golfers nationwide combining to this year raise a record R3 307 990 in support of the Cancer Association of SouthAfrican (CANSA) for research and treatment. “It’s for such a good cause and it’s won- derful to be out here supporting this,” said musician Elvis Blue. Blue, like half of this amateur field who come from such colourful golf corners of SouthAfrica asHartswater,Hopetownand Greytown, as well as golfers from across the border in Windhoek, were playing the Gary Player Country Club for the first ti- me. “Like so many South African golf fans, I’ve been watching this golf course on TV since I was a child. It’s great to be playing it myself now.” Rugby legend van Der Linde said he was also awed to be playing a course that has hosted some of the biggest names in world golf. “Just to walk these fairways, where so many great golfers have played over the ye- ars, is an incredible experience. I got goose- bumps walking to the ninth green and see- ing all those names in bronze on the path- way there – Ballesteros, Els, Price, Westwood, you name it. And to be suppor- ting such a great cause as thismakes it even better.” Musician Jakkie Louw made his fourth appearance in the Sanlam Cancer Challen- ge. “It’s awesome to be here. It’s great to be able to come here and play really bad golf for two days, but at least support a great cause.” Two great courses The 100 amateur golfers who qualified for the National Final played their first round on the Lost City Golf Club course. Their se- cond and final roundwas played at theGary Player Country Club.The Men’s Overall andADivision titlewent to former professi- onal CJ Head with his 75 points, including 36 at the Lost City Golf Club and then 39 at the Gary Player Country Club. Desiree Ear- le from Polokwane won the Women’s Over- all and A-division title with 72 points.
