Velazquez, D-N.Y., chair- woman of the committee, held the hear- ing to highlight the importance of pro- tecting intellectual property and how this protection can “spur job growth.” Several witnesses from differ- ent backgrounds, ranging from busi- ness software to motor vehicle equip- ment, testified at the hearing. William Mansfield, director of Intellectual Property for ABRO industries, testified on behalf of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), representing companies that manufac- ture motor vehicle parts for use in the light vehicle and heavy duty original equipment and aftermarket industries. U.S. House Committee on Small Business Holds Hearing on Impact of Intellectual Property Mansfield said, “Counterfeit parts and components for cars, trucks, buses and commercial vehicles pose a criti- cal problem to the American economy and the supplier industry because of the wide range of counterfeit products manufactured and trafficked world- wide. In the past, MEMA has estimat- ed that counterfeit goods cost motor vehicle suppliers at least $3 billion in the United States and $12 billion glob- ally in lost sales. Please note that the industry believes these numbers are conservative. In fact, Frost and Sullivan estimated in 2006 that the global losses to motor vehicle suppliers due to coun- terfeiting would be as high as $45 bil- lion in 2011.” Mansfield continued with com- ments relative to the health and safety impacts of counterfeit motor vehicle parts. He said, “There is a wide range of counterfeit parts and components for cars, light trucks, buses and com- mercial vehicles that are manufactured and distributed globally. Many counter- feit products, especially in the automo- tive parts industry, go undetected and are purchased unintentionally. Because trademark and brand infringement are so convincing, many times consumers or installers of these components may not be able to recognize or distinguish the genuine part from the counterfeit part. In many instances, the part manu- facturer becomes aware of counterfeit products when responding to warranty claims of a failed product. “Counterfeit motor vehicle parts Intellectual Property Turn to Page 29 Southern Automotive Journal September 20106 The U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources met yester- day for a markup of Senate Bill (S.B.) 3495, “The Promoting Electric Vehicles Act of 2010”; S.B. 2843, “The Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009”; and S.B. 679, “The Heavy Duty Hybrid Vehicle Research, Development and Demonstration Act of 2009.” The committee did not finalize its work on S.B. 679 and will address this bill at a later committee meeting. Both S.B. 3495 and 2843 were reported out of the committee. “The Promoting Electric Vehicles Act of 2010,” sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., introduced last month, aims to reduce the United States’ dependency on foreign oil and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The main com- ponent of the bill is Title I, “The National Plug-In Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Program,” which aims to: Reduce the use of petro- leum by accelerating the deployment of plug-in elec- tric-drive vehicles in the United States. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by accelerating the deployment of plug-in elec- tric-drive vehicles in the United States. Facilitate the rapid deployment of plug-in electric- drive vehicles. Achieve significant market penetrations by plug-in electric- drive vehicles nationally. Establish models for the rapid deployment of plug-in electric-drive vehicles nation- ally, including models for the deployment of residential, private and publicly available charging infrastructure. Increase consumer knowl- edge and acceptance of plug-in electric-drive vehicles. Encourage the innovation and investment necessary to achieve mass-market deploy- ment of plug-in electric-drive vehicles. Students attend- ing Universal Technical Institute (UTI) have the opportunity to obtain both. The UTI Foundation today announced a renewal of a $150,000 donation from Nissan North America, the organizations' second consecutive donation for schol- arships and internships. Thirty students will each be award- ed a $5,000 scholarship to support their work toward a career as a Nissan or Infiniti technician. Each student will attend UTI's nine-week Nissan Automotive Technical Training (NATT) program. The scholar- ship also includes a short-term intern- ship at a Nissan or Infiniti dealership. The witnesses, the Hon. Christine Varney, assistant attor- ney general for Antitrust at the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Hon. Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, testified before the committee and answered questions about competition and antitrust issues. Varney stated at a June 9, 2010, Senate hearing on "Oversight of the House Judiciary Committee Looks at Competition and Antitrust Enforcement of the Antitrust Laws" that she appreciated the support the Obama administration was offering in efforts to eliminate antitrust immunity for the health-insurance industry. At another conference in May, where she spoke with the American Bar Association, Varney had similar things to say about the health insurance industry, including how she fully supported the House's vote to repeal the McCarran-Ferguson Act. She supports competition in the health insurance field and the outlawing of price fixing, bid rigging and market allocation. The Automotive Service Association supports repeal of the McCarran-Ferguson Act for all insurers, including property and casualty insur- ers. H.R. 1583, the Insurance Industry Competition Act, sponsored by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., and Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation addresses ASA's concerns with the McCarran-Ferguson Act.n In response to the report requested by Congress from the Office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP) on how General Motors and Chrysler dealerships were selected for termination, Ed Tonkin, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), issued the follow- ing statement: “The SIGTARP report confirms what was said in NADA’s testimony pre- sented to Congress in several hearings and to the Auto Task Force in multiple meetings: ‘We do not see how these NADA Statement on Study of Dealership Closings cuts make economic sense – not for the companies, not for the dealers, not for local communities and certainly not for the struggling U.S. economy.’ “Similarly confirmed by the report was NADA’s unwavering position – also presented to Congress on multiple occasions – that ‘rapid dealer reduc- tions increase unemployment, threaten communities and decrease state and local tax revenue without any mate- rial corresponding decrease in the auto- maker’s costs.’ “Importantly, the Inspector General’s report also validates the Congressional efforts which gave thou- sands of dealers the opportunity to have a neutral arbitrator review their cases and possibly save thousands of jobs. “Finally, the report demonstrates what NADA has maintained for many years – that the franchised automobile dealership is and will continue to be the most powerful job-creating enti- ty on Main Streets all across America and that National Automobile Dealers Association’s 17,000 members provide long-term economic opportunity for nearly 1 million Americans.”n Tameron, your trusted automotive wholesale parts supplier, is now delivering Genuine Hyundai replacement parts to your area. Ford and do-it-yourself (DIY)- based TechShop have kicked off a col- laborative effort to open a workshop in the Detroit area that invites innovators, from backyard tinkerers to software engineers, to come on in and invent the next must-have in automotive technol- ogy. A membership-based open-access concept started in 2006, TechShop (www.techshop.ws) offers creative minds of all kinds affordable access to space, tools, and machinery so they can dream up, design and develop proto- types of their latest inventions. To date, TechShop has locations in California and North Carolina, with more than 800 total members. Ford and TechShop first met up in May at the largest DIY event of its kind, 2010 Maker Faire in San Mateo, Calif., where Ford was invited to show off its “American Journey 2.0” open- innova- tion vehicle app project with University of Michigan students. Last spring, for example, Ford actively engaged consumers to submit, share and suggest ideas and technolo- gies on the “Your Ideas” section of the Ford brand interactive consumer Web site, www.thefordstory.com. The pilot session generated some 3,600 submis- sions, giving consumers the ability to participate in a community-based set- ting where they could review and rate posted ideas and track what people thought about their own suggestions. And, more recently, Ford announced the creation of a virtual com- munity to engage software developers to innovate around SYNC. Ford's Automatic Braking Intersection Collision Avoidance System (ABICAS), which is under development, uses radio-based wireless sensors, GPS and navigation information to detect the relative location of other radio-equipped test vehicles. The system is being designed to warn drivers of imminent Ford Researchers Advancing Crash Avoidance Capability With Wireless Technology side-impact collisions and automatically activate the brakes if necessary to avoid or minimize the damage caused by such collisions. ABICAS is enabled by wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and works in conjunction with radar- and camera-based driver assist features, such as adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, which are available on many Ford vehicles. While radar and camera sensors can detect other vehicles ahead and behind a vehicle, radio-based wireless sensors give vehicles a 360-degree "view." Information from these various sensors is combined with engi- neering algorithms to ensure the validity of an imminent collision before automatically activating the vehicle's brakes – all of which hap- pens in a split second. When a vehicle is equipped with a dedi- cated short-range wire- less radio, it can com- municate with similarly equipped vehicles, and use the shared informa- tion in concert with its safety systems. "By leverag- ing wireless technol- ogy, Ford is developing tomorrow's crash avoid- ance systems today," said Jim Vondale, direc- tor, Ford Automotive Safety Office. "Thanks to research projects like ABICAS, tomorrow's vehicles will one day be able to talk to each other to avoid accidents." The smart way to cross intersec- tions Ford's vehicle-to-vehicle research builds on knowledge gained from its Smart Intersection project, focused on wireless communications between vehicles and intersection infrastructure. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40 percent of all traffic accidents occur in intersections where side-impact collisions are most common. The Smart Intersection project communicates with test vehicles to warn drivers of potential collisions, such as when a vehicle is about to run through a red light. The intersection is outfitted with technology that monitors traffic sig- nal status, GPS data and digital maps to assess potential hazards, and then trans- mits warning information to other spe- cially equipped vehicles. Once the information is received by the vehicle, its collision avoidance system can be designed to determine whether the car can safely cross the intersection or if it needs to stop before entering the intersection. If the system determines the need to stop and senses that the driver is not decelerating quickly enough, it issues visual and audible warnings to the driver. "For vehicle-to-vehicle communica- tions to be effective, common standards will need to be established for all auto- makers to follow," said Mike Shulman, technical leader, Ford Active Safety Research and Advanced Engineering. Optional third-row seats allow for up to seven-person capacity. The design strategy for the new 4Runner emphasizes a more rugged, powerful stance. Large diameter wheels and tires were added to not only improve off-road performance, but also enhance the 4Runner’s truck-based characteris- tics. In addition to its styling emphasis on ruggedness and outdoor adventure, the new design utilizes a combination of Toyota’s classic boxy form and progressive styling. All 4Runner grades fea- ture rugged new bumpers and wider shoulders, with newly designed head- lamp and tail-light systems, which offer a newly-minted, technical design quality and better nighttime performance. The front ends square fender flares meld with a muscular profile that links with a beefy and square rear bumper and back door. The Trail grade is designed to max- imize off-road performance with a supe- rior approach and departure angles, high ground clearance, and an array of func- tional upgrades for the most demanding active outdoor enthusiast. The 2010 4Runner is powered by a new 4.0-liter V6, which now gener- ates 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. Through the use of advanced engine management that includes dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the new 4.0-liter engine offers the best of both worlds, adding more power while improving efficiency. For 2010, the new V6 engine produces 34 horsepower more than the prior V6, and 10 horsepower more than the optional V8 of the previous genera- tion. To build on its tradition of rugged body-on-frame construction, the new- est 4Runner shares the same platform as the FJ Cruiser. Extensive frame and body reinforcements have been added, using high-tensile materials to add strength without adding weight. SR5 and Trail 4x4 models have a two-speed lever- operated, part-time system with neutral position, while the 4Runner Limited is equipped with full-time, four-wheel- drive with a locking center differential and employs a three-mode, center con- sole-mounted switch. The new 4Runner is also equipped with a stronger rear differential over the previous model, thanks to a gear ring that has increased in size from 7.87 to 8.18 inches. An array of advanced features, for- merly only available in the Land Cruiser, further boosts off-highway capabilities. The Trail grade offers Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as an option. KDSS radically improves ter- rain-following ability by disconnecting stabilizer bars to allow for more axle travel, and better suspension articula- tion in slow, difficult terrain. Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature is standard on the Trail grade. CRAWL is an adjustable electro-mechan- ical system that can be tuned to match the terrain by selecting any of five speed levels. The Trail grade also features a Multi-Terrain Select system which allows the 4x4 operator to dial in wheel slip control to match the terrain. In loose ter- rain such as mud and sand, more-than- normal wheel slip is permitted, allow- ing wheel-spin to work in the vehicle’s favor. All 4Runner 4x4 models are stan- dard-equipped with Downhill Assist Control (DAC), which is designed to aug- ment the low-speed ascending ability of low-range by holding the vehicle to a target speed with no driver interven- tion. All V6 4Runner models come stan- dard with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle stationary while start- ing on a steep incline or slip- pery surface. The new 4Runner may be a truck-based SUV, but it offers the kind of drivabili- ty and riding comfort more often associated with car- based platforms. Coil springs over gas shocks are used at all four corners for a comfortable ride and controlled handling. A double-wishbone inde- pendent front suspension, combined with new, variable-flow rack and pinion steering, makes for precise control on demanding roadways. The all-new 4Runner has been thoughtfully equipped with features and systems to create a comfortable travel space, allowing for convenient operation in everyday use. The larger interior has been com- pletely redesigned with comfort and utility in mind. The front seats have a greater range of adjustment, both verti- cally and front to rear. For second-row passengers, a newly sculpted front seat-back shape provides additional knee space. A center armrest has been added, and the sec- ond-row seats now individually recline up to 16 degrees in four steps. Third-row seating has been enhanced with a larger, more support- ive seating area. Access to the third row has been improved by splitting the second-row seats into a 40/20/40 con- figuration and adopting a one-touch walk-in function. The cargo area has been re-engi- neered to be more versatile than any SUV on the market. As NADA chairman, Tonkin has traveled the globe speaking to diverse audiences about the chal- lenges facing U.S. auto retailing. Produced entirely on Mazda- derived platform architecture, the five- passenger CX-7 is a fun-to-drive cross- over SUV that represents everything a Mazda should be: stylish, dynamic and a great value. That value increases for 2010 with the addition of the 2.5-liter normally aspirated engine. Fuel is delivered to the intake ports by an electronically controlled sequen- tial injection system, where the modu- lar ignition coils are positioned directly above the spark plugs for increased effi- ciency and reduced maintenance and under-hood complexity. Other lightweight items are the aluminum block and head, the forged powder-metal connecting rods (reduced reciprocating weight), and the injection- molded, nylon-reinforced-plastic intake manifold which also provides smooth internal passages for more efficient air flow. Overall, the normally aspirated 2.5-liter MZR engine delivers excellent off-the-line and overtaking characteris- tics, and is a strong match for the CX-7s dynamics. Continuing to be available, and car- ried over from the previous model years, the CX-7 also is powered by an award- winning 2.3L DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) turbo engine. Engineered to deliver high performance at all engine and road speeds, along with low exhaust emissions and good fuel economy, the MZR 2.3 DISI turbo-charged engine pro- duces up to an enthusiastic 244 horse- power at 5,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at only 2,500 rpm. A six-speed Sport AT automatic transmission also provides full manual control demanded by assertive drivers. Shifts are crisp, in keeping with CX-7's sportscar character. A light, stiff unibody provides the sound foundation for CX-7's smooth ride and agile handling. Computer- Aided-Engineering analysis was used to optimize this structure, delivering high torsional and bending rigidity with minimal weight. The new 2010 CX-7's styling is based on the athletic design of the current model, but incorporates enhancements for a clearer premi- um identity and more refined char- acter. The exterior design features a revised lower front grille with a larg- er five-point grille similar in appear- ance to those adopted recently on the Mazda RX-8, MX-5 and MAZDA3. CX-7's new front fascia clearly com- municates the Mazda brand, and harmonizes it with the latest models in the line-up. The 66-degree windshield angle is sleeker than many sports- cars, let alone SUVs. Distinct char- acter lines run through the A-pillars and along the edges of the hood to the front fascia. Prominent front fenders reveal a clear Mazda family identity. This distinctive overall exteri- or design is well balanced with the aerodynamics of the vehicle. While it provides outstanding aerodynam- ic performance, this exterior design does not compromise craftsman- ship. Panel and component part- gaps are flush and tight. Wiper arms are configured to match the surrounding cowl design and minimize wind noise. Attention to detail makes this car what it is. The updated premium look on the outside is continued on the inside of the vehicle with quality detailing that deliv- ers a sporty yet highly refined cabin. Tonkin also cautioned that any regulatory overreach could hurt the very people it is looking to protect by dis- rupting the extremely competitive auto finance marketplace. NADA: Financial Reform Law Protects Consumers and Keeps Auto Financing Affordable, Accessible Tonkin released the following statement: “Car buyers will ultimately benefit from the new law because it preserves dealer-assisted financing as a conve- nient and affordable option for con- sumers. "Original equip- ment manufacturers (OEMs) have little choice but to join in the drive to address the energy crisis issue." Mercedes-Benz SSK, short for Super Sport Kurz, was loud and fast. Known as the “White Elephant” for its brute force, the SSK had a commanding pres- ence and dominated road races due to its shorter wheelbase, Roots blower, and large displacement 300 horsepow- er motor, which boasted an impressive top speed of 120 miles per hour. The 1952 W194 300SL, built in just nine months, marked the debut of the SL moniker, meaning “Sport” and “Light.” While many chassis components were derived from a sedan model, its rigid tubular spaceframe forced developers to create its iconic ‘gullwing’ doors. The 1955 300SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupe,” named after Mercedes-Benz chief engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, was a closed roof version of the famous 300SLR racecar, designed to provide the most comfort for demanding long- distance races. Only two Uhlenhaut Coupes were ever built as it debuted the same year that Mercedes-Benz dis- continued its racing program. The 1956 W198 300SL is the stan- dard production version of the 1952 W194 racecar. Inspired by the race car’s unique styling and impressive perfor- mance, the 300SL ‘Gullwing’ coupe was brought to market through the efforts of USA-based Mercedes-Benz distribu- tor Max Hoffman who guaranteed an order of 500 units. Built from 1954 to 1957, only 1400 300SL ‘Gullwing’ coupes were produced and today are one of the most sought after collectible vehicles. Over a period of ten years from 1969-1979, Mercedes-Benz developed multiple C111 concept and experimen- tal vehicles representing the future of Mercedes-Benz sports cars – where comfort, luxury and performance were not mutually exclusive. The C111 vehi- cles were a technological tour-de-force and claimed nine speed records. Several technical and safety innovations made their debut on the C111s ranging from ABS, advanced front suspension later integrated into the S-Class, and turbo diesel engines. The tradition of developing super- sport cars throughout Mercedes-Benz history and setting new standards along the way continues with the 2011 SLS AMG, the first supercar produced entirely by AMG. The SLS AMG is a mod- ern super sports car with exceptional comfort and timeless style with all of the luxury and safety features expect- ed in a Mercedes-Benz. Its aluminum space-frame body, front-mid engine and rear-mounted transaxle provides a low center of gravity and race-car-like handling.
