Quantitative Methods for Decision Making Professor: Daniel Serra ([email protected]) Objetives: The aim of this course is to introduce students to the use of quantitative tools for decision making in complex management situations. Practical and real cases will be examined. Spreadsheets and other software will be used to solve the problems. No previous mathematical skills are required for the course. 1. Review of Linear Programming: Structure of the problem. Mathematical conditions. Objectives and constraints. Examples of formulations: human resources problems, capacity problems, transportation problems. Solver and other softwares. 2. Integer programming: problem formulation. The branch and bound procedure. The knap-sack problem. Assignment problems. Location problems. 3 Multiobjective programming: objective space. Efficiency in solutions. The weighting method and constraint methods. Case studies. Goal programming. 4 Other topics in optimization: Stochastic programming, non-linear programming. 5. Queuing theory and modelling: Conditions. Single servers. Multiple servers. Simulations. 6. Project management: PERT and CPM. PERT/COST. 7. Applications in logistics and operations.
