Spokesperson for the business operators, Zwelenkosi Ngidi, said last year they received a court order from themunicipality whowanted to have them removed from the places where they are trading. Since that was their only liveli- hood they hired a lawyer to challenge themunic- ipality in court. “I amsurprised that themunicipality is giving us letters to vacate while they know very well that the matter was still in court. It is against the law for the municipality to remove us from wherewe are, since it is clear in the constitution of this country that if a person had built in an area and was not removed within 24 hours, the person removing him or her must find an alter- native place for that person.” He said after receiving the notices the traders were very angry and they wanted to go to the municipal offices to stage a sit-in and destroy whatever they could. He said he had, however, managed to calm them down. The lawyer representing the traders, Lindile Qhina, said after receiving a call fromhis clients hewrote a letter to themunicipality asking them to stop harassing these people since the casewas in court. He said the case would have been final- ized by now if the municipality’s lawyer was at- tending but every time when they go to court, there was no-one from the municipality. “The interim order that was granted by the court to themunicipality to evict the traders had lapsed. It is only the court interdict that we launched which is still pending in court and if the municipality attends that can be finalized,” said Qhina. Express contacted the office of the Mbizana Municipal Manager, Luvuyo Mahlaka, for com- ment. Thepersonwhoanswered thephonewant- ed to know what the call was about and it was explained to her that a comment was needed from themanager regarding the notices given to the traders. She said themanagerwas busy on another call and took the Express reporter’s contact details, but at the time of going to press he had not re- turned the call. Renowned advocates from the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, Dali Mpofu, backed by Richard Spoor’s office and Matthew Chas- kalson, have decided to defend the accused and demand compensation for damages to the victims. Copyright REPORTER THE petrol price is falling so quickly that a further reduction of R1 may be on the cards, according to economist Mike Schüssler of economists.co.za. “About two weeks ago I thought it would drop another 25 cents, then about a week ago it looked like it would be a 50 cents’ drop. Now it is looking like a rand decline could become true,” he said. “That would be the second R1 decline and would bring the whole reduction to over R4 or a saving of R580 per month for the average motorist.” Thiswill again boost consumer spending on other products and services, in his view. “Notice how empty shops were just after Christmas as products sold more than ex- pected. This would be close to 6% of formal sector disposable salaries - that is take- home pay after taxes and pensions, using BankservAfrica data,” he explained. “Consumers will take this as another good sign and if it were not for the power outages, I would estimate that this would have boosted the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2% to 2.5% by now. That is if it lasted for the whole year, of course.” The BankServAfrica Disposable Salary Index shows that typical disposable sala- ries are still just under R10 000 per month and the average just over R12 000. In his view what is now needed is to “get Eskom going and get all politics out” of the power utility. Saijil Singh, lead analyst of Coface, the international credit insurer, says their projections indicate another drop in petrol price is definitely on the cards, and a 50c reduction is a strong likelihood. “There are various factors to consider here and the prevalent one is definitely the drop in oil price. We must be careful, how- ever, to not ignore the reality of a very weak rand and gains in a dollar-based com- modity are not directly translated locally,” he warned. “Simply put, while the oil price has come down by more than 50% in the last six months, it does not mean that consumers will see a 50% fuel price reduction locally.” Petrol price could drop by R1 Another factor to note, he pointed out, is that Coface believes the current Brent price to be an overreaction due to weaken- ing demand from the US. “We are further predicting the price to normalise around the $75 mark in the lat- ter part of 2015,” he said. “Overall, consumers should be getting some relief in the form on a fuel price cut locally, but consumer confidence is still very low and we should not expect this to immediately translate into an increase in retail spend.” In his viewmost consumers will be wary of a petrol price hike later in the year and cautious activity could definitely be ex- pected. – Source: news24 3 News January 29, 2015 Uvolwethu Express UMZIMVUBU ENTERPRISE EXCELLENCE AWARDS ULM is requesting all the SMME’s to register in the LED office with the aim of entering an excellence awards competition. AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA EASTERN Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, together with Premier PhumuloMasuale, reopened the Tsolo Ag- riculture and Rural Development Institute (TAR- DI) last Thursday in Tsolo. Also part of the event was Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister, Senzeni Zokwana, and Ru- ral Development and Land Reform Deputy Minis- ter, Mcebisi Sikwatsha. Qoboshiyane said the re-opening launches the three-year agricultural diploma that will start off with the dipping and castration of livestock. “TARDI has been processing student applica- tions from interested students, some of whom have since been admitted to study at the Institute,” said MEC. He said that the diploma will equip all provincial animal health practitioners with professional knowledge to help curb livestock parasites, control state controlled diseases, and provide veterinary extension and advisory services to communities. “Owing to the cases of rabies and other animal diseases prevalent in their areas, the first group of students hails from Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo district municipal- ities.” TheMEC highlighted that quality animal health- care was critically important to the economy of the province because agriculture was one of its main economic drivers, and a major contributor to its domestic product. The first group of 30 students had been accredit- ed by the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) to study a bridge course for 18 months, con- sidering their accredited diploma in animal pro- duction. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries also handed over a veterinary clinic to the Institute. Diploma in AnimalHealth launched Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle, Rural Development and Land Reform Deputy Minister Mcebisi Skwatsha, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Senzeni Zokwana, Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane, tasting bananas grown by a Lusikisiki-based co-operative during the re-opening of the Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute. GREG NOTA BUSINESS owners, many of whom are for- eign nationals, are living in fear following a spate of armed robberies last week Tuesday and Wednesday. One foreign national business owner, who did not want to have his name published fear- ing for his safety, said the incidents of last week have left them all with the question of “who will be the next victim?” “These armed robbers are aware that we sleep in our business premises that we rent from the locals. They attack when they know that most of the people are sleeping and no one will identify them. We wish that community members from the areas where we rent busi- nesses will assist us in identifying these cul- prits and isolate them from society,” he said. According to him the community need them the same way they need their support in buy- ing from their shops. They are bringing grocer- ies closer to the people as they don’t need to travel to town saving on transport money. Provincial Police spokesperson Lieuten- antKhayaTonjeni confirmed the armed rob- beries that took place in three areas of Bi- zana and an assault at the Greenville area. He said on Tuesday, January 20 a case of an alleged business robbery in Ngcingwane locality was reported and Bizana police are investigating. “A case of robbery was also reported and is currently under investigation after an in- cident that happened atKhaleni locality also on Tuesday. At time of going to print no sus- pects had yet been arrested. There was also a report of another business robbery and assault in the Greenville area on Wednesday,” said Lt Tonjeni. He said a Somali (33) man was assaulted on the scene. Despite rumours that someone had died at the scene, according to Lt Tonjeni no one died during this incident. GREG NOTA TEACHERS have heeded the call by the De- partment of Education and started teaching on the first day of the new academic year. To ensure that this was in fact the case and that schools were ready for the year, the East- ern Cape Department of Education Portfolio Committee chairperson Kholiswa Fihlani, committee members and leaders from politi- cal parties visited several schools in the sub districts of Lusikisiki and Flagstaff. According to the Acting DistrictManager, Thozamile Binase, some of the schools they visited did experience a few hiccups which were resolved. The schools that they visited were Nomza- moJunior Secondary School (JSS), Thembu- kazi JSS, Meyisi Senior Secondary School (SSS), Mgezwa SSS, Hillbrow SSS, Jiba SSS and Botha Sigcau SSS. Binase said some of the challenges that they came across at these school were short- age of desks, school bags not being delivered in time and problems with the infrastruc- ture. “At Jiba SSS there was a problem whereby parents had chased away the principal but that was resolved and the principal is back at the school. “Nomzamo JSS and Hillbrow SSS had a ma- jor problem of infrastructure which caused overcrowding in the classrooms but fortunate- ly for those two schools they have been ear- marked for construction,” said Binase. He said at most of the schools that they visit- ed, teachers and learners were ready to start working as learners were in classrooms on the first and second day and in some cases there were only a few learners that still needed to be admitted. Mobile libraries and labs were also do- nated to the schools. Initiated in 2010, the campaign, which forms part of Nedbank’s holistic educa- tion programme called Fundisa, had in- vested over R11 million for more than 10 000 learners’ uniforms, shoes and sta- tionery. One of the beneficiaries, Mzuxolo Ga- gashe, a matriculant from Ngwekazi Sen- ior Secondary School said; “The school uniform, shoes and stationery I received will enable me to focus more onmy studies while the mobile library and labs will help me and fellow learners to prepare better for matric exams.” Nedbank’s Fundisa programme aims to build effective schools through infrastruc- ture development, teacher training, build- ing leadership capacity and providing classroom-based support. The bank had also been contributing to the improvement of education outcomes for learners in Grade 9 to 12 through its career guidance programme “My Future My Career” and the Matric Revision Pro- gramme, which forms part of Fundisa. “We partner with government, civil so- ciety and communities to contribute to the goals of the National Development Plan. Education is a key Corporate Social In- vestment (CSI) focus area for Nedbank as it contributes towards a strong and flour- ishing knowledge-based economy,” said Kone Gugushe, Divisional Executive for CSI at Nedbank. “We believe that investing in children will create a better society for all of us.” The bank encourages all people in South Africa to contribute towards the campaign by smsing the word ‘school’ to 40017 to do- nate towards stationery, uniforms and shoes. You can even blind the people on this land by wearing a nice church uniform if not a suit and carry a very advanced Bible, but if ukholo is not in your heart or if it is not a calling you are justplayingandGodwill reveal that.Okay, here is a story. There was a guy whomwe used to stay with at Khwezi Township in UTA some couple of years ago. Actually he was a yard-mate. The guy claimed that he was saved and he prayed about half of the night even in themid- dle of the night. Okay, we had no problem with that even though his action was a bit tormenting to us because he was always disturbing us in our slumber. But ke nothing esasingayenza the guy had accepted the calling and ethetha nenkosi yak- he. Every weekend he was not in UTA, stating that he was going to spread the word of God in other places particularly Idutywa.Okay son of God. You remember we said God will reveal if your ways are not as we see when you are in front of us. In January we met the man again pushing the word of God very strong in UTA. As you know we travel a lot and sithanda ubumnandi. We took a journey to Idutywa and it is where he used to visit stating that he had lot of followers there. OW! Mrwetyana is giving these talks on UCR, Khanya, Ink- onjane, Vukani and Alfred Nzo community radio sta- tions. He is also currently working on his new social show at Bay TV which will be aired around March this year. “I want to live a life that will be a motivation to many, especially for those in my age group,” said Mrwetyana. He said he wants young people to know that whatever they want to achieve in life is possible with faith in God. PHOTO: SUPPLIED “I am now a Gospel artist and that has always been my dream,” he said. He said he loves working in radio but not more than singing Gospel and worshipping God through music. “I love radio and I have big plans of growing in it, but my music career comes first. I live it and it is my minis- try.” Mrwetyana is currently busy with the in-store distri- bution of his two albums (“Undithandile” and “Ebene- zer”) and said that sales of both albums are doing well. He is also going back to school this year to finish his Matric at Holy Cross High School. By doing this he is also hoping to motivate other young people to put educa- tion first. “Education is very important. As an artist you need to sign contracts and before you can do that you must be able to to read and understand what is written.” 8 Sport January 29, 2015 Uvolwethu Express Our friendly sales team 1. The match was played in hot weather con- ditions atMsobomvu Sports ground last Sat- urday. After their humiliating defeat to the visi- tors, GreenLovers coachGoldenNguqu said they played very well but their goalkeeper made somemistakes which resulted in them having to pay the price. “I really don’t know what went wrong with our goalkeeper today because he used to make great saves and he is a good goal- keeper. “But todayhe conceded three unnecessary goals. We did not deserve to lose the game because we created a lot of chances but un- fortunately we could not manage to convert those opportunities into goals,” said Nguqu. He added that they started the game with young players in order to test them and give- them a chance. He urged community members to support soccer and to come in numbers to the grounds to watch the games as this would encourage the young players a lot. Butterworth united FC bossMzwamadoda Sinyanya said his team maintained their game planwhichwas 4-3-3. They used highly skilled strikers upfront with the aim of scor- ing goals and they were equal to the task. “Before the match we told our midfielders to pass the ball quickly to the strikers so that we could outrun Green Lovers’ defenders and punish them, and they did exactly what we told them.” He said he was happy with a win but was disappointed with the turnout at the stadi- um. He said he would like to see people sup- porting the games and coming in numbers to the stadium.
