Ncurocomputing 6 (1994) 147 147 Elsevier NEUCOM 317 Farewell to a pioneer: Eduardo R. Caianiello A physicist by training, Eduardo R. Caianiello was one of the brave fews who dared to start the field of neural networks more than 30 years ago. In 1991 he was one of the founders of the European Neural Network Society. He was chairing the organization of the 1994 Conference ICANN'94 in Sorrento until he suddenly and peacefully died on October 22, 1993 in his home in Neaples. Let us remember and perhaps re-read one of his seminal papers: E.R. Caianiello, Outline of a theory of thought process and thinking machines, J. Theor. Biol. 2 (1961) 204-235.
