The result of many months of development work, the MS120R is designed for use on excavators weighing from 70-125 tons, weighs in at 12,000 kg (26,400lb) and is fully rotatable. While not the heaviest multi processor in the world, the MS120R’s maximum jaw opening of 2.5 m (8.2 ft) when fitted with crusher jaws makes it the widest opening tool of this type in the world. When fitted with shear jaws, it offers a maximum opening width of 1.175 mm (46.3 in). The MS120 has been specifically designed in response to a request from one of Mantovanibenne’s customers who was searching for a solution that would speed the ground level demolition of large dimension reinforced concrete columns, pillars and plinths, and at the same time carry the work as quietly as possible. These building elements can be demolished using standard hydraulic hammers, but this involves considerable more time and generates substantial noise. The first unit has been supplied to Italian contractor F lli Baraldi, who will use it on a 125 ton Liebherr 984. According to Mantovanibenne, versions suitable for use on other makes of suitably sized machines will be available in the near future. d&ri A novel mobile grinder has made its first European appearance on Merseyside, in the north-west UK. Developed in the USA by 2G Environmental, and available in that country since 1995, the Green Grinder has been imported by its UK counterpart and is actively being backed by the Clean Merseyside Centre, who has worked with 2G to get the unit licensed for use in the UK. It can turn up to eight skip loads per day of new build construction waste, such as blocks, brick and gypsum through to pallets, woods and shingles, turning it into reusable material. The company told D&Ri that as far as it is aware, the Green Grinder has yet to be used to process demolition waste. The new MS120R from Mantovaniben ne has the large st jaw width of a ny demolition mu lti processor Mantovanibenne’s record breaking crusher/shear attachment can demolish ground level concrete pillars, columns and floors more quickly and quietly D&Ri March-April06 World News.indd 4D&Ri March-April06 World News.indd 4 15/03/2006 09:18:0515/03/2006 09:18:05 5d&ri march-april 2006 diary dates 2006 NDA Convention 2006 March 26-29, 2006 Nashville, USA Tel: +1 (215) 3484949 Fax: +1 (215) 3488422 www.nadc.org Intermat 2006 April 24-29, 2006 Paris, France Tel: +33 (0)1 49685248 Fax: +33 (0)1 49685475 www.intermat.fr CONEXPO Asia May 15-18, 2006 Beijing, China Tel: +1 414 298 4141 Fax: +1 414 272 2672 www.conexpoasia.com EDA Zaragoza Conference May 25-28, 2006 Zaragoza, Spain Tel: +31 35 542 7505 Fax: +31 35 542 7600 www.eda-demolition.com SED 2006 May 16 – 18, 2006 Corby, Northants Tel: +44 (0)20 8652 4810 www.sed.co.uk M&T Expo May 30 – June 3, 2006 Sao Paulo, Brazil Tel: + 55 11 4197 9111 Fax: + 55 11 4197 9110 www.rmtexpo.com.br ANKOMAK 2006 May 31 – June 4, 2006 Istanbul, Turkey Tel: +90 212 291 83 10 Fax: +90 212 240 43 81 www.ankomak.com www.imder.org.tr CONET 2006 July 13-15, 2006 Makahri Messe, Tokyo, Japan www.jcmanet.or.jp SAIE 2006 Bologna, Italy October 25-29, 2006 Tel: +39 (0)5 12 82 111 Fax: +39 (0)5 12 82 332 www.bolognafiere.it e-mail: [email protected] Bauma China November 21-24, 2006 Tel: +86 21 5045 0808 Fax: +86 21 5045 8100 www.bauma-china.com Bauma 2007 April 23-29, 2007 Munich, Germany Tel/Fax: +49 89 9491 1348 www.bauma.de demolition bits ■ D H Griffen has begun work on one of the largest demolition contracts in the USA – the removal of the 6 million ft2 Pillowtex Corporation textile plant at Kannapolis, North Carolina. Five hundred thousand tons tons, or about 80 %, of the material on site, will be recycled - 10 million bricks will be reused and 400,000 tons of rubble crushed into gravel. Currently, 80 Griffin employees are working on site, with the job expected to last 18 months. ■ Hundreds of one- story buildings in three adjacent areas are to be demolished to make way for a new campus building for the University of Beijing. The demolition phase is due for completion by January 2007. The job is said to be the largest demolition project in the country’s history. ■ Toronto’s Regent park area will see the demolition of hundreds of dilapidated apartments as part of a C$1 billion project. The first phase will demolish 418 and see them replaced with 750 mixed use, mixed income homes due for completion by 2008, with the whole project not expected to be completed until 2018. ■ The US Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the removal of a large amount of demolition waste that was illegally dumped into the San Pedro River at Pomerene, Arizona. Triumph Builders, who supervised demolition work and waste disposal for a new school construction, and its subcontractor D Fenn Enterprises, who transported the waste from the project, dumped the material without consultation or authorisation from state of federal regulatory authorities. will allow better manufacturing techniques to take hold, reduce lead times and afford an overall streamlining of the production process. It will also allow Jewell to make that leap to the next level in serving new customers and new markets – a move that was simply not possible in the company’s previous location.” Jewell opens to state-of- the-art manufacturing the official opening: “This is a day to which we’ve all looked forward for some time now. This new facility Providing both office and manufacturing space, the new facility is spacious, well planned and, claims the company, world class in very regard. The 51,000 ft2 (4,740 m2) manufacturing, fabrication and assembly area is designed around 10 continuous flow work centers to make use of the lean manufacturing principles now being used by the company. At the heart of the operation is a 48 ft (14.6 m) CNC-controlled plasma burn center, multiple machining centers, areas for fabrication, 5-50 ton capacity overhead cranes and sufficient floor space to simultaneously accommodate a considerable number of excavator conversions, attachments or components. According to Van Sant, chairman of Jewell’s parent company Paladin, on the day of world news The ribbon is cut to officially open Jewell Attachments’ new manufacturing facility Wood to burn A test has been carried out by TES Filer City power station in Michigan, USA, under the eyes of officials from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality, to see if demolition wood debris can be used as fuel to generate electricity. The officials monitored a test burn to help determine whether the debris, sourced from Chicago demolition projects, can be burned in compliance with state regulations and the plant’s DEQ permit. The material was a mix of clean timber from demolition and green wood from tree trimming. The volume of treated or painted wood can only make up 4.5 % of the waste stream, according to the plant’s state permit. The DEQ has yet to decide whether new requirements or restrictions would be necessary for the Chicago waste to be disposed of in this way. The plant hopes to be able to use this waste wood alongside the coal, other wood waste and tire chips that it burns to generate electricity for Consumers Power Co and steam for the Packaging Corporation of America’s adjacent paper mill. In early February the Portland, Oregon, suburb of Tualatin saw the official opening of Jewell Attachments’ new 60,000 ft2 (5,575 m2) manufacturing facility, where the company will carry out its conversion operations. Jewell specialises in the preparation of excavators for use in special duty roles in the demolition, construction, logging and material handling industries, as well as the manufacture of attachments for these industries. d&ri D&Ri March-April06 World News.indd 5D&Ri March-April06 World News.indd 5 15/03/2006 09:19:1415/03/2006 09:19:14 1*/ ,"1 , 7- "%44%20%2&/2-!.#%n5,4)-!4%#/-&/24!.$3!&%49n2%$5#%$25..).'#/343 2ELIABLESOLUTIONS ˆÌ>V…ˆÊ œ˜ÃÌÀÕV̈œ˜Ê>V…ˆ˜iÀÞÊ ÕÀœ«i®Ê 6]Ê- 7 Êx]Ê6 Êx££Ó]Ê£ä{xÊ/Ê-/ ,]Ê*°"°Ê "8Êx™ÓΙ]Ê£ä{äÊ Ê-/ ,]Ê/ Ê / , -]Ê/ʳΣ‡ä®ÓäÊ{{ÊÇÈÊÇää]ÊʳΣ‡ä®ÓäÊÎÎÊ{{Êä{x]Ê777° ° " 4(%.%84 '%.%2!4)/. (!3!22)6%$ ). 3)$ %3 4! .$ /5 43 )$ %3 4! .$(!,, 34!.$+// . 34!.$$6)3)453!4).4%2-!4 !2%! % Full page.indd 1Full page.indd 1 14/03/2006 10:45:3414/03/2006 10:45:34 7 world news d&ri march-april 2006 Planning for growth Monday 27th February saw the official opening of Fintec Crushing and Screening’s new factory extension that will allow the company to double its production level of 200 units per year to 400. The event was combined with the first ever Fintec dealers’ meeting, with around 70 people present all told, attending from many countries. The new facility is just one stage in managing director Hubert Watson’s ambitious plans for the company (in conjunction with minority partner Sandvik, who supplies the crushing expertise to the partnership). He told D&Ri: “Our goal is to turn Fintec into a top three crushing and screening equipment manufacturer within the next five years. To do this will involve further product development, to take us to the point where we have a 10 to 12 model range by the end of that period.” The company is currently working hard to expand its dealer network around the world, with three new dealers just having been appointed to service the French market. The new three bay extension has been designed specifically to be used for initial fabrication work (in two bays), as well as being Fintec Crushing and screening has officially opened its new production facility near Dungannon, Northern Ireland, which will allow it to double production of its range of equipment Rewarding excellence Caterpillar Work Tools Europe has joined a select group of companies through its gaining Oliver Wight Operational Excellence certification for its Den Bosch facility in the Netherlands. Cat Work Tools Europe is one of a select few companies around the world to gain this certification, which is considered a major milestone in achieving Business Excellence. In order to be certified, a company must provide evidence of business process excellence, superior performance and a robust master plan to achieve a ‘Vision of Excellence’ through effective strategies, best practices and a relentless commitment to continuous improvement. Den Bosch has joined four other Caterpillar facilities worldwide that have achieved this goal. The US Association of Equipment Manufacturers has introduced a 48-page safety manual intended for users and renters of scrap and material handlers. It covers basic do’s and don’ts for typical work situations, covering topics such as general safety, start-up and shut-down procedures, and guidelines for safe operation and maintenance. The guide covers scrap and material handlers in general, and is therefore intend to supplement and not replace existing safety codes, laws and regulations or manufacturers’ operating manuals. The 2006 edition of the D&Ri Buyers Guide will shortly be available, with full listings of all types of demolition attachments and equipment, along with listings of general construction equipment commonly found on demolition sites around the world. This data will form an invaluable tool for your equipment selection activities. The Buyers’ Guide will be available in several formats – both printed and electronic – to provide the maximum flexibility and use, and has been compiled using an in-house developed directory software package to provide an easily updatable access point for manufacturers. If you manufacture equipment for the industry you can easily update your own company-specific data at any time from now on. For more information about accessing the system, contact Lindsay Gale at lindsay.gale@khl. com. Most have worked in the industry all their lives, often with the same company. On the one hand, this goes a long way to giving the industry its (generally) friendly relationship-oriented drive. The same people crop up time and again, and over the years, business relationships develop a strong element of personal friendship. But it could be argued that this strength is also a source of weakness. Where are the ideas from outside? Where do the fresh approaches come from? How innovative can the industry be if its senior mangers have only been exposed to one specific sector and business model? In the past, ‘promotion from within’ was a defining feature of Japanese corporations across the board. The concept of corporate loyalty and the expectation of a ‘job for life’ meant many people’s careers were invariably spent with one company. This all makes the appointment of Tsutomu Sakurai as president of Komatsu Europe an intriguing one. Although he started his career with Komatsu in the mid-1970s, he left the company in 1995 to join Applied Machinery, a US corporation with annual sales over €8 billion (US$9.6 billion), which leads the world in the supply of equipment for the manufacture of integrated circuits. Mr Sakurai has been back with Komatsu for just under a year, and acknowledges that his appointment has elements of the extraordinary to it. “It’s very unusual for a Japanese company to appoint an executive who has just spent 10 years working for another company. It’s the first time Komatsu has done it,” he said. But while Mr Sakurai’s appointment is a break from the norm for both the company and the industry in general, Komatsu’s choice of president for its European business sends a strong message about what the company feels is needed. “The semi conductor business is a completely different business to this one. It moves very quickly. But maybe this different business culture can make a positive impact on Komatsu’s business model, and I think that’s why Komatsu put me into the most traditional market – Europe,” said Mr Sakurai. Manifesto “What do I want to do?” asked Mr Sakurai, “At the moment we’re moving towards more market solutions. We have already established a retail finance company, and we now offer a captive finance operation locally. We also offer various leasing options.” Most executives in the construction equipment business have worked in the industry all their lives. Not so Tsutomu Sakurai, the new president of Komatsu Europe, who is using his 10 years’ experience in the semi-conductor industry to reshape the way the company does business. Chris Sleight, editor of Construction Europe and International Construction, reports d&ri march-april 2006 interview Outside influences >10 D&Ri March-April06 Interview.indd 9D&Ri March-April06 Interview.indd 9 15/03/2006 09:27:1715/03/2006 09:27:17 10 march-april 2006 d&ri It sounds simple enough, but Mr Sakurai’s vision entails a re-think of how Komatsu approaches the European market. “In the semi-conductor industry, everything is done by the manufacturers, and no-one has a dealer or distributor. The manufacturer takes care of the full life cycle of the product, and that is the best approach for quality assurance.” “Dealer networks are very important, but I think this industry needs to mix and match between direct sales and distribution. Manufacturers that just believe in this 19th century dealer distribution model will lose market share, because they just can’t provide solutions,” he stated. One aspect of ‘delivering solutions’ that has played on the minds of many European manufacturers over recent years is how to approach the equipment rental sector. The market has matured at an incredible pace in recent years, with many contractors freeing-up capital by outsourcing their non-core, or even all, their equipment needs to rental companies. But the way manufacturers have addressed the growth in rental has varied widely. At one extreme is Caterpillar, which has encouraged its dealers to set up Cat Rental Store franchises. At the other end of the scale is JCB’s chairman, Sir Anthony Bamford, who has frequently described such initiatives as manufacturers ‘competing with their customers.’ “I have a very clear view on this,” said Mr Sakurai, “There is captive rental, like Caterpillar does, and I am totally against that. Customers need a lot of different equipment and there is just not one supplier. Even Caterpillar does not have a total range of products – it doesn’t offer concrete mixers and cranes and so on.” “So I think if we went for a manufacturer-oriented rental house it would be very limiting. It is not a solution. The other point is that manufacturers are not very good at this kind of daily turnover business. None of them have ever succeeded in any industry. Nobody.” “Day to day businesses like rental are completely different, and today none of these captive rental houses are profitable. There may be artificial profits because manufacturers can offer discounts on the equipment, but it’s not the right way.” Mr Sakurai’s approach is to focus on supplying independent rental houses with high quality machines, through a newly established central sales team. “If our products and solutions are better than others we will succeed. The rental market is our customer, and I have set up a direct sales team here that is targeting the top 20 or 30 rental companies in Europe,” he said. According to Mr Sakurai, this model also fits better with the increasingly cross-border nature of European rental. “Rental machines move around so much that the old geographic territories don’t mean anything. Customers don’t want to have to talk to a new dealer every time they move a machine around. That’s not a solution,” he said. After the boom Like most manufacturers, Komatsu is reaping the benefits of a buoyant European market, but Mr Sakurai is mindful of the future. As well as changing the way the company conducts its new equipment sales, he feels there is a place for the semi conductor industry’s ‘cradle to grave’ mentality, which means more active management of used equipment markets. “I want to utilise this good period to reform the way we do business, including used equipment. Sooner or later the peak demand will end and there will be an abundance of used equipment in Europe. I’m preparing for that period when we will have a lot of equipment to export to places like North Africa and the Middle East.” “The good thing about European equipment is that it has the lowest engine and noise emissions, and low fuel consumption. They are the most sophisticated and environmentally-friendly machines, and that is becoming more and more important worldwide. Low specification used equipment will not be attractive in a few years because governments all over the world are developing laws on sustainability and environmental protection. People will prefer to buy high-spec used European equipment,” Mr Sakurai concluded. d&ri 10 interview D&Ri March-April06 Interview.indd 10D&Ri March-April06 Interview.indd 10 15/03/2006 11:05:2515/03/2006 11:05:25 VERMEER and VERMEER LOGO are registered trademarks of Vermeer Manufacturing Company in the U.S. and/or other countries. © 2005 Vermeer Manufacturing Company, All Rights Reserved IT’S WHAT WE DO. Of the 100 companies qualifying for the d&ri100, 25 feature on the list for the first time, with the highest placed of these, LVI Services Inc, coming in at number 8 The top five has also changed order, with Penhall International taking the top slot away from Manafort Borthers, which is pushed into third place as a result of Brandenburg being one of the few companies to retain its 2005 place at number 2. The total combined turnover of the 2006 d&ri100 companies >14 D&Ri Mr-Apr06 D&Ri100.indd 13D&Ri Mr-Apr06 D&Ri100.indd 13 15/03/2006 11:13:5515/03/2006 11:13:55 14 march-april 2006 d&ri d&ri100 is US$2,701 million, up some US$325 million on the same figure last year. However, I feel it would be inappropriate to use this comparison to draw conclusions about the state of the industry because of the considerable number of new entrants to the list. The top 50 contractors between them accounted for US$2,074 million, 78% of the total d&ri100 turnover. The top 25 accounted for US$1,494, or just over 55%. Perhaps of more note is that of the 75 companies that were listed last year, 43 (58%) indicated growth, of varying degrees, in their turnover over the previous year, while only 28 (37%) showed a decline in turnover. This appears to suggest that the industry has generally been experiencing a degree of growth. Where the 25 companies that no longer appear in the list are concerned, there are a number of reasons for this. The most common, unfortunately, is that they failed to respond to our repeated information requests and we were unable to obtain relevant financial information to update their data. There are a very few who’s performance dipped substantially on their 2004 results, sufficient to remove them from the list, but generally these were companies towards the bottom of the d&ri100. As was the case in 2005, the top half of the list is dominated by North American companies. I would like to thank all who responded. If you did not respond, I would like to encourage you to do so next year. The greater the response, the more authorative the d&ri100 listing will be. Where a company is included, the data relating to 2005 financial performance was either supplied the company itself or sourced through a variety of financial data resources. D&Ri has endeavoured to ensure the accuracy of the information supplied by checks carried out on selected responses using these independent sources but, nevertheless, can accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions that may have occurred. sourcing the data: standing at US$20.8 million. By a process of elimination, that leaves just nine contractors on the list from outside these two geographical areas, accounting for the final US$88 million. This certainly suggests that there are many more out there that have failed to submit data for their activities – a matter we will attempt to address for next year’s d&ri100 listing. Once again, I would like to thank all those who supplied information for this year’s d&ri100 and I would also like to encourage those who did not do so to submit data for next year. New noise and engine emissions laws, and a booming construction equipment market, mean there will be literally hundreds of new machines and other equipment launched at the show, many of which will find applications in the demolition and recycling industries. Most of the new machines on display will be updated versions of existing models. Greater performance, fuel-efficiency and safety are common themes and manufacturers in all segments, from earthmoving to lifting, are designing their machines with these in mind. As a result, construction machines are becoming more and more sophisticated, with on-board computers and engine management systems playing a crucial role. The introduction of Tier 3/Stage IIIa emissions laws for 130 to 560 kW engines at the start of this year means that several brand new series of earthmoving machines will be at the show featuring new diesel power packs. This is most apparent with crawler excavators and wheeled loaders. More than 40 new mid- to large-sized machines from the major manufacturers, all with Tier 3/Stage IIIa engines, will be unveiled. There will doubtless be further models launched at Intermat that we are not yet aware of. Perhaps the most telling thing about the ‘What’s new at a glance’ table is not the machines we know about at this stage, but the ‘gaps’ for certain manufacturers. These will come. The Tier 3/Stage IIIa engine emission laws are a legal requirement – if a new machine in the 130 to 560 kW power band does not have a compliant engine, it cannot be sold in Europe or the USA. There are ‘flexibility provisions’ that allow a small number of ‘old Stage’ engines and machines to be marketed, but these are limited. Nowhere is this the flood of new machines more apparent than with Caterpillar’s launches. Intermat will see the company launch eight new D series crawler excavators from 20 to 37.5 tonnes, and five new H series wheeled loaders from 18.5 to 30.5 tonnes. Komatsu’s three new crawler excavators in the 20 to 30 tonne classes all feature its ECOT3 Tier 3/Stage III3a compliant engines. The 21.4 to 22.9 tonne PC210-8, 24.6 to 26.2 tonne PC240-8 and 29.2 to 30.2 tonne PC290-8 offer the operator two working modes for either heavy or light work. Features on Komatsu’s new D155AX-6 crawler dozer include a new blade and ripper design, powertrain improvements and the move to the company’s ‘K-bogie’ undercarriage. The 9.4 m3 capacity Sigma dozer blade has a convex profile, designed for maximum penetration and rolling, while still retaining a flat edge for grading. In the wheeled loader segment, high up the weight category, is Komatsu’s WA600-6 wheeled loader, with a maximum operating weight just under 53 tonnes and a 393 kW Tier 3/Stage IIIa engine. Despite its size, the noise level in the cab is just 73 dB(A),the lowest in this machine class, according to the company. Back with excavators, New Holland’s E150 ‘Blade Runner’ is an interesting machine that combines the functions of an excavator with a dozer. The power, angle, tilt (PAT) blade on the front of the undercarriage has its own hydraulic circuit, which combines with oversized motors to perform to the same levels as a dedicated mid- sized crawler dozer. The blade also has wings on its edges to improve dozing performance, and these can be folded back or removed if not required. New Holland will also be showing the ‘Multi Function’ version of its E215LC excavator, originally launched at last year’s Samoter exhibition, which features a four-piece boom for long-reach applications. Sister company Case’s main new product launch is the 69 tonne CX700 crawler excavator, a heavy-duty machine between the existing CX460 and CX800 models and the first Case excavator to use an electronically controlled Tier 3/Stage IIIa engine, a 345 kW Isuzu. Hitachi will be launching several new crawler excavators, with more to follow later this year. New at the show will be the 25 tonne class Zaxis 250-3, 28 tonne Zaxis 280-3 and 35 tonne Zaxis 350-3. The company’s stand will also include the 52 tonne class Zaxis 520 LCH-3, and 67 tonne Zaxis 670 LCH-3, while the models coming later in the year are the 47 tonne Zaxis 470 LCH-3 and 87 tonne Zaxis 870 LCH-3. The company’s stand will also feature its new ZW series of wheeled loaders, which, like the new excavators, feature Tier 3/Stage IIIa compliant engines. Liebherr will also launch its new range of ‘2plus2’ wheeled loaders, with the first models now fitted with Tier 3/Stage IIIa compliant engines. The new models are the L 566, L 576 and L 580, and it will be the L 576 that Liebherr has on show. In the crawler excavator sector, Liebherr’s latest machine is the 37.8 to 42.7 tonne R 944 C Litronic, which is fitted with a Tier 3/ Stage IIIa engine. The machine has repositioned hoses and a restyled engine cover for better visibility, and the large cab has an automatic air conditioning system. The hand controls have march-april 2006 d&ri28 been updated with the hydraulic system now being more responsive for faster cycle times. The machine is available with four chassis options. Doosan Infracore – the construction equipment business created by Doosan Group’s acquisition last year of Daewoo Heavy Industries – will display more than 30 machines. The company will show a new range of large DX excavators, comprising five models between 30 and 51 tonnes, powered by the company’s own Tier 3/Stage IIIa common rail engines. Doosan will also launch two new wheeled loaders at the show, the 162 kW, 18 tonne Doosan’s new 23 tonne wheeled loader, the DL400 DL300 and the 204 kW, 23 tonne DL400. Again the machines feature Tier 3/Stage IIIa engines – Doosan’s own in the DL300 and a Cummins in the DL400 – and both are fitted with ZF’s Ergo Power transmission. New additions to Volvo’s range are long boom versions of its L60E, L70E, L90E and L110E wheeled loaders, which mean long boom options are now available for models from the 11 tonne L60 E right up to the 50 tonne L330E. This option adds between 0.42 and 0.52 m to the loader’s dump height, depending on the model. Volvo will also celebrate 40 years of manufacturing articulated haulers, which happily coincides with the production of its 50000th machine. This special truck will be on display at the show. Hyundai will be using Intermat to unveil its new flagship excavator, the 50 tonne R500LC-7A, which slots in above the retained 45 tonne R450LC-7. Powered by a 250 kW Tier 3/Stage IIIa compliant Cummins engine, the machine can be fitted with up to a 3.2 m3 bucket. Another top of the range addition is the company’s 30 tonne HL780-7A wheeled loader, powered by the same Cummins engine as Hyundai’s new excavator, but rated slightly higher at 259 kW. JCB will be presenting two new tracked excavators at the show, the 19 tonne class JS190 Auto and 33 tonne class JS330 Auto. The smaller machine features a 98 kW engine, which the company says gives it 10% more productivity over 18 tonne machines, with 14% more lifting capacity and 5% faster boom cycles. The grab has five tines and is available in 0.4 and 0. 6 m3 sizes, for use on carriers in the 20 to 35 tonne weight range. The GWS is a dynamic weighing system designed for use with loading machines and excavators and allows the weight to be monitored during the loading cycle. According to Genesis, the system allows for faster cycle times because the operator does not have to interrupt the cycle to get accurate weight data. Combi Wear Parts is extending its range of tooth systems for excavator and loader buckets to cover all mini-machines on the market less than 10 tonnes. Two tooth types will be available, flat and pointed, in two sizes with bucket break out forces of up to 35 or 55 kN (excavator) and 60 or 85 kN (loader). MTG will be showing three new products at Intermat, the MTGtwist, a hammerless tooth- adapter retainer solution, the MTGSystems StarMet tooth-adapter system for large excavators and MTGPlus Teeth side-pin system for Caterpillar machines, with the MTGtwist retainer solution as an option. Compact and utility equipment Unlike the earthmoving sector, there are no new engine emissions laws driving new product launches for compact and utility (machines up to about 10 tonnes) equipment. But the this type of machine is remarkably popular in Europe and the continuing development of the region’s rental sector is driving up sales at 20% per year for some equipment types. So needless to say there will be plenty of new machines on show at Intermat, mainly due to manufacturers plugging gaps in their ranges, or in some cases 37d&ri march-april 2006 intermat preview Attachments is Arden Equipment’s speciality, and it has extended its hydraulic shear product range with through its European distribution arm. The company’s V Series breakers are available foe use on excavators weighing from 15 to 55 tons, while its DFC Series crushers can be used on machines from 13 to 32 tons. The RS range of shears can be mounted on excavators from 2 tons to 45 tons. Multiprocessors are also available, in the form of the seven model DMP range for use on machines from 18-32 tons. Arden Equipment will be displaying two new scrap shears in the shape of the AS-027R weighing in at 2570 kg (5654 lb), designed for use on excavators weighing 18 to 37 tons, and the AS-070R, weighing 6800 kg (14960 lb) for excavators 35 to 80 tons in weight. Idromeccanica Italia will be showcasing its “M” series of breakers, which was launched about 2 years ago but has been further improved. These are able to tolerate counter- pressure and work with very little oil flow. The series is currently made up of five models, two small ones – the IMI 18M (190 KG) and IMI 26M (240 kg) – and three larger units – IMI 170M (1800 kg), IMI 240M (2400 kg) and IMI 290M (3000 kg). These also feature closed casings which protect the body of the breaker and are made up of few parts making maintenance simple and easy to carry out. Spanish hydraulic breaker manufacturer Tabe will be presenting its range of products at Intermat. The highlight of the exhibit will be the new AGB-95 breaker first seen at SMOPYC´ in 2005. The Volvo stand will also feature the company’s HB range of hydraulic breakers, a new seven-model line-up ranging from 0.82 to 3.8 tonnes in operating weight. This comprehensive range covers carrier weights from 9 to 70 tonnes, meaning there is a good match available for any of Volvo’s midi, medium and large excavators. Wacker has introduced two new drilling and Neuson’s 38Z3, a 3.5 tonne zero tail- swing mini excavator breaking hammers to its range of products for the demolition and recycling market. The Magic EH 9 BL(M) and Magic EHB 11 BL(M) feature an integrated electronic converter that transform 230 V single phase current into three phase current that enables the hammers to use three phase motors. This significantly improves long- term operation because the three phase motors do not need to have the carbon brushes or rotors replaced. Genesis will be launching two new products – a new grab and the Genesis Weighing System (GWS) - that will be exhibited alongside its established Logix Processor LXP multi-jaw attachment. Neuson iillustrates both points well. The company is extending its range of zero tail- swing excavators with the launch of the 3.5 tonne class 38Z3. A laterally installed engine provides room for a large cab, which is tiltable to improve maintenance access. At the lowest end of the weight categories, it has two new small machines. Its yet to be named 800 kg (1760 lb) machine is just 700 mm wide, and is powered by 3-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine. New in the 1.5 tonne class is the 1403. The company’s ‘Easy Fork’ loader linkage enables parallel movement and high payloads in pallet fork applications, and a hydraulic quick coupler is fitted as standard, allowing rapid switching between the forks, buckets and other attachments. The loaders have a top speed of 30 km/h, allowing them to move quickly between sites, and they also feature a tilt-up cab for easy maintenance access. Further up the weight category is the WA150PZ-5, weighing in at 8.7 tonnes with a 71 kW engine. The machine features Komatsu’s new ‘PZ’ boom linkage, a modified Z-bar design that provides high break-out forces with the parallel movement required in pallet fork applications. Four key new machines in New Holland’s range are the W50TC, W60TC, W70TC and W80TC tool carrier wheeled loaders, which replace their non-tool carrier predecessors. The new loaders have a mono boom front end with the cylinders located underneath, giving the operator an excellent view of the front attachment. All four feature Deutz engines, rated at 40, 44, 45 and 56 kW respectively. Tipping loads range from 2.95 to 3.75 tonnes at full articulation, with dump heights from 3.25 to 3.45 m (10.6 to 11.3 ft). The 4,8 tonne W50TC has a travel speed of 20 km/h, while the other models, which weigh 5.1, 5.6 and 5.9 tonnes, can reach 35 km/h Sister-company Case will also show a wide selection of its light equipment, including recently 47d&ri march-april 2006 intermat preview Caterpillar has replaced its entire mini excavator and backhoe loader ranges in time for Intermat >48 ® D&Ri Mar-AprO6 Intermat.indd 47D&Ri Mar-AprO6 Intermat.indd 47 15/03/2006 10:27:4915/03/2006 10:27:49 48 march-april 2006 d&ri intermat preview Kramer’s 4.8 tonne, 0.75 m3 bucket 750T compact wheeled loader, which features a telescopic boom for a 2.55 m dump height. narrowed to get it through tight spaces, and expanded again for more stability when digging. But what makes Bobcat’s machine different is this is a standard feature on the 319 while, according to the company, all other suppliers in Europe only offer it as an option. Bobcat has also introduced a new hydraulic breaker, the HB380, which is suitable for excavators up to 1.7 tonnes like the 319. The unit is supplied to Bobcat by Ingersoll Rand sister company Montabert, and is part of its Silver Clip range of tools for breaking, excavating and compaction. Yuasa Trading will be showing a range of equipment from Yamaguchi (mini dumpers), Morooka (dumpers), Hanta (mini-pavers), Baroness (hammer knife mowers) and Airman (mini excavator). While not all the machines are new in the strictest sense of the word, many will be seen for the first time in Europe at Intermat. Of the six Yamaguchi walk-behind mini dumpers at the show, the WB06D and the Mecalac’s 8 MCR may look like a 6 tonne excavator, but the company’s boom design means it can also be used as a loader introduced 400 series skid steer loaders, the Super R Series 2 backhoes and the 10 model TX range of telehandlers. There will be two new zero tail-swing mini excavators in the 4 to 5 tonne segment from JCB, the 8040 ZTS and 8045 ZTS. These have a large cab, fitted with a fully suspended seat as standard. Controls are mounted to the seat, and the whole assemble can be adjusted for maximum comfort and visibility. The machines also have an automatic idle system, which drops the engine revs after four seconds without activity to save on fuel costs. Doosan Infracore will launch its first zero tail swing mini excavator, the 3.65 tonne DX35Z, with other zero tails-wing models to follow. Also in the compact equipment category, the company is adding to its skid-steer loader range with the launch of the 1,134 kg (24950 lb) capacity 470 Plus model. Intermat will see Mecalac branch-out further into the midi excavator market with the launch of its 6 tonne 8 MCR crawler machine. Being a Mecalac, there is of course more to the machine than just its digging power. The company’s unique boom design means the excavator can also be used as a loader. A front facing bucket can be attached via the 1quick coupler, and this can be filled from a stockpile, lifted, and discharged at height. This 2 in 1 machine has a hydrostatic drive system, which delivers travel speeds up to 11 km/h. Mecalac’s German subsidiary, Ahlmann will be presenting an enhancement to its AS 90 tele – a wheeled loader with a swivelling, telescopic front end. The machine is now available with an overload alarm and load indicator, similar in style to those used in cranes. Hyundai is filling a gap in its smaller excavator range with the introduction of the 8 tonne R80-7 midi excavator. The company says the 45.5 kW Yanmar engine makes this the most powerful machine in its class. Despite its compact dimensions, the excavator has a 1 m (3.3 ft) wide cab. Bobcat’s 1.3 tonne 319 features a variable width undercarriage that can be Ammann’s new zero tail swing mini-excavator, the ViO25, is available in a cab or canopy version >50 D&Ri Mar-AprO6 Intermat.indd 48D&Ri Mar-AprO6 Intermat.indd 48 15/03/2006 10:28:5815/03/2006 10:28:58 Stand 5B CO21 Full page.indd 1Full page.indd 1 14/03/2006 12:04:0314/03/2006 12:04:03 WB06DHL will be seen for the first time in Europe. The Mooroka tracked dump trucks at Intermat will comprise the 4.3 tonne capacity MST800VD, 6.3 tonne MST1500VD, along with the 2.5 tonne 180° swivel tipping MST300VDR. The Airman AX-3 mini excavator series consists of seven models from 1.6 to 4.2 tonnes operating weight, while the AXU-4 short tail-swing models range from 3 to 4.8 tonnes. Telehandlers Kramer has added telescopic handlers to its portfolio, thanks to a partnership with Claas. The range will eventually range from 6 to 17 m (19.7 to 55.8 ft), but the first two models available are 6 and 7 m (19.7 and 23 ft) lift height machines. JLG will show a special compact version of its 266 model, called the Lo-Pro 266. This will be under 2 m high, compared to the 2.2 m height of the standard model. Manitou will unveil its new MRT 3050, which the company claims is the tallest rotating telescopic platform and will be commercially available from the end of this year. The new machine offers all terrain performance as well as lift heights of up to 30 m (98 ft) and is capable of carrying loads of up to 5 tonnes using a fork attachment. Manitou’s Twisco range has been improved and the SLT 415B has been replaced by the SLT 420 B which has a lifting capacity of 2 tonnes to a height of 4 m (13.2 ft) instead of the previous 1.5 tonne operating limit but still retains a compact design. Manitou has achieved the capacity increase by adding a rear counterweight, fitting a new Perkins engine with 25% more power and increasing the hydraulic capacity of the forks. An upgraded version of the Buggiscopic telehandler will also be on display for the first time and will be named the Buggiscopic Evolution. The revised machine features a new drive train, a new more ergonomically designed control lever and a new 51 hp (38 kW) Perkins engine that offers 25% more power. 50 march-april 2006 d&ri intermat preview Intermat will see the launch of Doosan’s first zero tail-swing excavator, a 3.5 tonne model Yuasa Trading will be showing three hydrostatically driven, rubber tracked Mooroka dumpers, the MST300VDR, MST800VD and MST1500VD >53 D&Ri Mar-AprO6 Intermat.indd 50D&Ri Mar-AprO6 Intermat.indd 50 15/03/2006 10:30:0315/03/2006 10:30:03 Full page.indd 1Full page.indd 1 14/03/2006 12:06:1014/03/2006 12:06:10 SENNEBOGEN Maschinenfabrik GmbH Hebbelstrasse 30 • D-94315 Straubing Tel.: +49 (0) 9421/540-144 / 146 / 150 Fax: +49 (0) 9421/ 43882 E-Mail: [email protected] www.sennebogen.com HD Crawler Cranes • Crawler Cranes • Handling Machines • Telescopic Cranes • Harbour Cranes • Truck Cranes ■ Optimum all-round visibility and safety, thanks to the elevating, tilting cab! ■ High overall loads with large working radius and reach heights ■ Easy to transport thanks to telescopic undercarriage ■ Extra heavy-duty machine construction – not just a converted standard excavator Convincing benefits: Leading through Innovation 850 Full page.indd 1Full page.indd 1 14/03/2006 12:08:5314/03/2006 12:08:53 53d&ri march-april 2006 intermat preview The Evolution will be available in two models, the 2 tonne BT 420 fitted with a fast fit carriage for multi-functionality and the 2.5 tonne BT 425 that has an industrial carriage for great capacity. Work from the 32nd floor down to the technical level on the 17th floor was carried out rapidly. Once this floor was reached, the Brokk’s were fitted with buckets and used to clear the floor of demolition debris from the floors above. The Brokks then switched back to hammers to continue their demolition work down to the second technical level at the 3rd floor, where once again rubble was cleared and then the remains of the building finally brought down. The Brokks proved so efficient that by July 2005, two thirds of the building had been removed. Demolition activities finally ceased in November, three months ahead of the initial schedule. This proved a major benefit, as the large safety zone that had to be established around the gutted tower seriously disrupted business activities in the adjacent commercial district. All in all, the Brokks proved an ideal solution in this highly challenging application. Madrid’s eighth tallest tower block, which had been a feature of the city’s skyline since 1979, had disappeared from view in as little as eight months. 64 march-april 2006 d&ri site reports Fire destroyed the Windsor Tower in Madrid, Spain, on the night of 12th February 2005, leaving a twisted blackened shell that had to be removed. Contractor Construcciones Ortiz was brought on site by the Madrid local authorities to carry out this work and made considerable use of remote control demolition techniques to maximise worker safety W hen Ortiz came on site, demolition of the badly damaged tower was expected to take 11-12 months, with major challenges to be overcome, including space constraints and the risk of partial collapse. The first job was the clearance of concrete and metal that made the structure unstable. This was carried out by sub-contractors Hidrodem, using hydro-demolition techniques, and Perfox, using oxyfuel cutting. Once this had been completed by February 22, the Brokk equipment could make its entry. The radio control capability was a crucial factor where worker safety on the tower was concerned. The machines did perhaps have to be lifted into confined, and often unstable positions, but their operators were able to find a safe position from which to control the machines. The light weight of the Brokks was also a major advantage given the generally weakened condition of the structure. Normally, five machines were used to bring the building down from the top, although an additional two units were on-site at specific stages of the job. Fitted with Atlas Copco hammers, the machines were used to cut the concrete Remote demolition on the Windsor d&ri The Windsor Tower blazes in the night sky above Madrid’s commercial district After the fire, the 32 storey building awaiting demolition A Brokk rem ote control demolition robot on its way to the top o f the buildin g Five Brokk units (four 180s and one 90) equipped with Atlas Copco hammers were constantly working on site D&Ri Mar-Apr06 Site Report.indd 64D&Ri Mar-Apr06 Site Report.indd 64 15/03/2006 09:30:2015/03/2006 09:30:20 km radius of the city. In charge of day-to-day operation is Juan Manuel Biosca, whose father started the business some 30 years ago. He sees continuous growth for many years to come as redevelopment of one structure has a knock on effect on other similar structures in the area. Although the company runs a fleet of wheeled excavators, mini-excavators, skid- steers, backhoe loaders and trucks, its main demolition tool is a Case CX330 demolition excavator, configured to give a maximum reach of 21 m (69 ft). Biosca’s demolition spec’d case CX330 at work in Larida, northern Spain 65d&ri march-april 2006 T hroughout Europe there are many buildings that were speedily erected during the first half of the last century to meet the demand for housing, commercial and industrial needs. Many of these hastily erected building had a design life of just 20 to 30 years, although many remain standing today - almost 100 years on. Major cities are now demolishing many of these, as city centres are redeveloped and regenerated. Although conservation measures are taken, many old buildings are not suitable for conversion to meet modern day requirements. Spain is no exception and there are redevelopment and regeneration schemes to be found everywhere. Such is the demand in some areas that specialist contractors have successfully established themselves – companies such as B. Biosca, in the northern Spanish city of Lerida. Biosca, although involved in other activities, is very focused on demolition works within a 150 Mr Biosca says that the reason for specifying this particular model was the versatility that his company needs for the various demolition projects in the region. He went on to say that most inner-city demolition projects, within the area his company covers, are only 5 or 6 storeys high and typically are steel frame with brick infill. Although demolishing structures of this type of structure does not demand extremely heavy- duty equipment, they do require equipment that is easy to control and adaptable to different duties. In many instances, the building being demolished is tied into the buildings on either side. It is not unusual for one or both of the buildings to have some historic value and so have to be protected from any potential damage, requiring a highly skilled operator and an easily controlled machine. The Case CX330 demolition unit is based on the CX330 tracked excavator, which has an operating weight of 34,000 kg (74,800 lb) plus 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) additional counterweight for demolition usage. The engine is rated at 185 kW. With the additional hydraulic power necessary to meet the demolition tool requirement, the model is proving an economical solution as it can be quickly converted back to standard excavation mode for clearing and excavating foundations on the building has been demolished. The machine is used with a 2 m (6.6 ft) long NPK crushing shears and, to provide protection from falling debris, the base machine features side protection and steel plate reinforcing underneath the chassis. The cab is also heavily reinforced and tilts back to give the operator perfect visibility of the cutter head. site reports d&ri Case high reach demolition excavators are proving a popular option for Spanish contractors. D&Ri sets the scene for their use in Spain Up and under demolition in Spain Underwater Demolition Normally demolition is above ground, however on the Island of Majorca, Seprosub, a specialist marine contractor, is using a Case 210 long reach excavator with a 13 m (42.5 ft) boom and a special milling head to demolish and cut through underwater concrete slabs for trenching purposes. The machine is currently working, together with a team of scuba divers, on a project to smooth the harbour floor to build a new sea wall at the port of Alcudia, on the northeast coast. Again, the contractor selected the Case 210 because he needed a machine that could be easily configured for different applications. Apart from being used for underwater demolition, the 22.4 tonne machine is also used with a clamshell and bucket - the clamshell can be used for depths of up to 12 m (36.5 ft). After completing the first section of the current project, the machine will be mounted onto a small ship from where it will excavate over 6,000 m³ of sand and silt at Palma Harbour, on the opposite side of the island. D&Ri reports that it had to rent high reach equipment that could cope with the silos. Rental operation Freimuth of Bulkau had just purchased two New Holland units – an E485 with a working height of 25 m (82 ft) and a E385 with a 20 m (65.6 ft) reach. The silo job required the services of the E485 to reach the top of the structures. The machine was transported to the site on a trailer specially designed by Belgian company Faymanville that allows the whole machine to be moved as one, with the boom stretching 19 m (62 ft) when folded in transport position. Once it reached the site, it was a very quick job to make the machine ready to start work, with only the removal of an integrated securing rod that protects the cylinders being required. The 54.4 tonne E485, fitted with a 2 tonne VTC 30 crusher, then began the demolition of the silo. By the end of the first day, the roof construction and large parts of the main walls of the silo had been dismantled – the most difficult part of the job. Using such equipment requires a confident and competent operator. According to Freimuth’s Dieter Urbahn, who used the machine on the job, “The excavator has sufficient hydraulic power to crack thick walls, controllability is excellent and because of the stability the machine provides, you always feel safe, even when working at full height.” The E486’s 9.8 litre Isusu turbocharged diesel delivers 340 hp (255 kW) and Kobelco’s Smart Hydraulik System (SHS) provides a hydraulic flow of 2 x 370 litre/min to ensure efficient attachment power. Stability is provided by the machine’s 3.5 m (11.5 ft) wide undercarriage, which adjusts to 3 m (9.8 ft) to facilitate transport. The standard high reach E485 specification includes FOPS cab guard, protected hydraulic hoses and cylinders, a reinforced roof window with washer/wiper and central lubrication on the attachment. Another feature of the machine is the tool position display in the cab. Three sensors continuously monitor the tool and calculate its position, feeding the resulting data back to the display. When the attachment leaves the safe working envelope, and optical warning appears on the display and an audible warning sounds to alert the operator. The E485 is available with other optional equipment, including a monoboom digging attachment that can be fitted to the coupler. Link-Belt is no exception, and the company has announced the recent release of a Tier 3/Stage IIIa compliant version of its 330 LX tracked excavator. It has been fitted with an Isuzu AH-6HK1XYSS 6 cylinder engine with an output of 271 hp (202 kW) that features common rail fuel injection, a fuel cooler and turbocharger with intercooler, and exhaust gas recirculation. Link-Belt says that the new engine enhances productivity because of its 10 % greater power than its predecessor and a 7% improvement in fuel economy. Link-Belt has also installed auxiliary piping brackets as standard to allow users to install additional after-market hydraulic circuits for attachments such as breakers and shears without having to carry out welding or painting. d&ri Stanley LaBounty has been developing a new automated blade lubrication system for its Saber shears, which field tests have shown significantly reduces maintenance requirements and improves performance. Called the MSD Saber-Lube Series, the new shears will be first seen by the industry at the NDA Convention in Nashville at the end of March. A number of claims have been made by Stanley for the new series, including a doubling of blade life, build-up welding time on the affected jaw areas reduced by 50% and downtime per year reduced by more than two weeks. Engine power equipment Aquajet extends its range Swedish hydrodemolition company Aquajet has extended its HVD range of robots with the addition of a top-of- the-range model first seen at the World of Concrete exhibition in Las Vegas in January this year. The new model boasts an improved front skirt and power head that provides increased versatility and improved access up to wall edges and into corners, thus reducing the need for hand trimming. Previous models could leave as much as 10 cm (4 in) that require manual removal. A stronger construction holds the head more securely when indexing up to 6 m (19.7 ft) free- standing height to provide more stable operation and to eliminate any flexing and movement. In addition, a stronger dual drive system offers increased hoist safety, with the second drive unit starting automatically in the event of the first’s failing. Well established technology is also a feature of the new model in the shape of Aquajet’s proven high pressure lance control system that provides smooth and precise movement of the cutting head, with a simplified computer control system that provides easier programming of the machine. The new unit is 12.5 ft (3.8 m) in height and 8.6 ft (2.6 m) in width, features a high strength steel frame and is transportable fully set up. To set the unit up on site, the operator simply backs the unit up to a stockpiling conveyor, starts the engine and lowers the hydraulic stabilisers. Power comes from a six-cylinder 240 hp (180 kW) John Deere diesel with auto-shutdown gauges and critical duty muffler for quiet operation in urban areas. A heavy duty grizzly feeder has a direct-coupled hydraulic motor to provide variable speed control. A bypass section or optional reject belt can be used to remove fine, undersized material. The main challenge of the job was the site’s location close to a busy road, which created obvious safety concerns for the vehicles passing by the site. As a result, all demolition work was carried out at night, with the road closed to traffic to minimise safety risks. It took the Cat fleet just over two months to complete the demolition job, with the 385C UHD leaving the site in early February. It is now working on another Eco.ge industrial demolition project, a former lubricant factory in Livorno. The four excavators generated a total of 18,000 m3 of concrete demolition waste, and this is currently being crushed and screened on site. Unusually, Eco.ge actually owns the site of the former oil refinery. Once demolition and clear up is completed, a new headquarters building and workshops will be built, with the remaining 38,000 m2 being sold off for the construction of a sports center and other new buildings. The demolition phase of the project began in August 2005, with the 385C arriving on site in mid-November 2005. The LT105 is being use to crush demolition debris, which is then used as fill material on site, thus avoiding transport off site that would add to the city’s already heavy road traffic. The LT105 is being fed with debris, including cement blocks with a large number of steel rebar and tiles, by a Liebherr 904 excavator. With a 45 mm closed side setting in the Nordberg C105 jaw crusher, the Lokotrak LT105 is producing around 150 tonnes/hr – working in 10 hour working days, 1,500 tonnes of clean recyclable end product are thus produced every day. The LT105 is owned by Spanish rental operation EMIL Import SA, and is being operated by Hermanos March, who in turn is carrying out work for the main contractor, Drenex SA. LINDSAY GALE was there for the first time Running over the 3rd and 4th March, the annual German Demolition Conference attracted an audience of 360 delegates to hear a wide range of presentations covering the demolition industry. In a packed first day programme, 18 papers were presented, covering topics as diverse as insurance requirements, hazardous substances, health and safety at work, explosive demolition through to site reports on specific projects. The proceedings were opened by Dr-Ing Dietrich Korth, the organiser of the event, who indicated the themes of the event – first, improving safety and protecting the environment and second, technical and economic developments. As has become traditional, next to speak was the current president of the German Demolition Association (Deutschen Abbrushverbandes e.V), and this year it was Dr.-Ing Helmut Roller. He outlined the current activities of the association, which from an outsider’s perspective appears strong, with 46 new members joining last year. The association’s 2006 annual congress will be held in Leipzig on 22-24 September 2006. D&Ri hopes to attend this event and will report on happenings in the November-December issue. Then it was into the technical papers, which proved more of a challenge for the four English- only speakers present (all UK residents, naturally). I would like to thank Walther Werner for his informal translation efforts that allowed us to grasp the nature of subject matter being presented by the various speakers. In fact, this year was the first time that delegates attended from the UK, but perhaps next year may see a greater number, which also may justify professional English parallel translation services being provided. Of particular note was the paper presented by Dipl.-Ing Axel Steinhauser from Specht, Kalleja and Partner GmbH. He described the particular challenges that were encountered in planning the demolition of the former East German parliament building, the ‘Palace of the Republic’. Because of Berlin’s high water table, and the close proximity of other buildings, special techniques have had to be devised to maintain the weight loading on the building’s foundations during demolition work. A water/sand slurry will be pumped into the concrete foundation tub as work progresses, with the water gradually being removed. A novel technique will also be used to remove demolition debris off- site – a loading wharf behind the building on the River Spree will see this material being loaded onto barges and then transported out of the city centre, minimising traffic impact, Finally, a ‘table top’ exhibition, with 40 companies taking part, was open over the course of the first day, with a wide range of equipment and accessories on show to the delegates during breaks in the technical sessions. All in all, a very informative, enjoyable experience, and I one I hope to repeat next year. EDA Conference dates confirmed The European Demolition Association has announced the date, venue and speaker details for its conference in Zaragoza, Spain. The Hotel Melia Zaragoza is the venue, with the conference running from the 35th to 28th May, including visits to the Fider trade fair being held in the city during the same period. Opened by IDE president John J Law, the event’s official programme officially consisted of six papers (but ended up as seven) covering varying aspects of sustainability that certainly provided food for thought for the audience. Martin Hampshire from the Licensing and Enforcement Unit of the UK’s Department kicked of the event for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). He outlined the scale and problems caused by illegal dumping or fly-tipping of waste, of which C&D waste accounts for 16 % of incidents reported to reporting mechanism Flycapture and 30 % of incidents dealt with the Environment Agency. He then outlined the regulations currently in place to deal with the problem and the plans for further measures, which largely centre around the establishment of site waste management plans. The regulations establishing the requirement to develop such plans is likely to come into force in 2007, with various discussions ongoing over the course of this year to develop SWMP requirements, along with Duty of Care regulations and stop, search and seizure powers. A lively Q/A session resulted. He was followed by a presentation by the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Agency, made by Martin Robb. All of the UK’s current nuclear power stations are reaching the end of their life and are due for decommissioning. The NDA aims to have all 11 Magnox reactors demolished and their sites cleared for alternative use within the next 25 years. This offers obvious opportunities for the demolition industry. Mr Robb outlined how the NDA plans to administer this work through a number of site licensees, management contractors and subcontractors. He then went on to deal with the sustainability issues involved. The final morning session consisted of two presentations on the topic of explosive demolition, association news High quality sustainability Sustainability is a current industry buzzword. As a result, the UK’s Institute of Demolition Engineers took it as its theme for a recent seminar held in London. Made by Denise Clarke, Special Advisor to the Standards Setting Body for Explosives, Munitions & Search Occupations, this brought to the attention of the audience the work that has been done in the UK to establish standards and criteria of competence in the handling of explosive substances. The establishment of these for the use of explosives in demolition has yet to be done, so she set out the current situation and the plans to develop standards for the areas yet to be covered by soliciting input from interested parties in the industry. She was followed by Mark Hatt, who discussed the aims and work undertaken by the European Federation of Explosives Engineers, and the progress it has made in developing a European Shotfiring Certificate. The highlight of the event, at least for your editor, was the first afternoon paper presented by industry consultant Terry Quarmby, who looked at how the industry and technology will have to develop to take account of sustainable issues in terms of equipment and techniques. In essence, his paper can be summarised as follows: “we have spent the last 20 years developing demolition equipment that takes the man out of the building – sustainability will put the man back into the building.” Accident statistics in the industry have been rising since the late 1990s and the question is whether this can be ascribed to a ‘sustainability effect’? He believes that the equipment used will change over the next 20 years as dramatically as it has over the last 20, since today’s equipment will not allow the levels of recycling being demanded by the legislators to be achieved. New technologies will increasingly be a feature of the demolition industry with high tech solutions and robotics probably being part of this. D&Ri plans to report more fully in the forthcoming May-June issue. He was followed by Julian Cope, materials pro ject manager – plasterboard, from the UK’s Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP), who provided an overview of the programme’s current activities and an outline of the new structure the organisation has put in place in increase its impact, face more directly specific industry sectors, increase coordination and integration and establish fewer but larger targets in its business plan. He then went on discuss the activities this UK NGO is currently carrying out with respect to the recycling of plasterboard. Various trials are being put in place to determine how best to handle this type of waste material and to develop end uses. D&Ri plans to visit one such site that is handling demolition waste of this type later in the year to report on progress. Of particular note is the development work currently being carried out on a portable plasterboard crusher that can be used on site to turn waste plasterboard panels into a more easily handled form. The final presentation was made by Brian Neale and covered the current situation with regard to the Bristish Standard covering demolition, BS 6187 2000, which is currently going through the five year review process that the British Standards Institute conducts on every standard. Comments from interested parties concerning the standard have been solicited but it appears that everybody is currently happy with the its coverage, since minimal feedback has resulted, and the standard is likely to be ‘confirmed’ until the next five year review in 2010. All in all, this IDE event left attendees with plenty of food for thought, as well as offering more than a few editorial possibilities for this magazine. It certainly was well worth the day out of the office. d&ri association news Denise Clarke asked for input from the industry in the development of standards and criteria of compentence for UK explosives operatives Explosives and the current European Shotfiring Certificate was also the topic for Mike Hatt As is the case in most events of this type, the IDE seminar offered an ideal networking opportunity for delegates One highlight of the presentations was a discussion of the future of the industry by consultant Terry Quarmby Julian Cope, presented a background to WRAP and its recycling efforts along with his particular area of activity – recycling plasterboard With BS 6187 2000 currently under review, Brian Neale outlined the current situation and discussed the current options D&Ri Mar-Apr06 Assocations.indd 80D&Ri Mar-Apr06 Assocations.indd 80 15/03/2006 11:30:4815/03/2006 11:30:48 Full page.indd 1Full page.indd 1 14/03/2006 12:36:4514/03/2006 12:36:45 S U B S C R I P T I O N R E Q U E S T F R E E S U B S C R I P T I O N R E Q U E S T F O R M A N D A D V E R T I S E R S I N D E X What type of organisation do you work for?
