These switches can be controlled in two different ways. The first way is “smart switch mode.” In this mode, the switch is controlled by sending a preamble (usually three characters) to the master port. As soon as the preamble code is received, the selected slave port is connected to the master port. The second way the switch can be controlled is “port combiner mode.” In this mode, a slave port can access the master port by asserting a handshake line. If none of the slave ports have their handshake line asserted, the switch can be controlled using the preamble codes. There is no delay through non-buffered switches. In the days of yore, the PCI bus used 5 V signaling on the PCI connector. Some PCI buses, including many of today’s newest PC’s use 3.3 V signaling. A keyed notch in the card prevents it from being plugged into the wrong version of the bus. If you buy a 5 V PCI card, it won’t fit into a 3.3 V bus, and a 3.3 V PCI card won’t fit into a 5 V bus. A situation fraught with peril for the casual customer. Not to worry, all of the PCI cards in the following pages follow the Universal PCI specification, officially termed PCI V2.3. As you might guess, Universal PCI is compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V systems. To tell if your card is Universal PCI, look for two keyed notches in the bus connector, indicating that it will fit (and work.) in any PCI system. What about the ISA bus? Data Switches Technician’s Notebook Janet: Isolation zones explained Isolated serial card design requires attention to three things. Special optocouplers isolate the serial signals from the PCI bus. Unique isolated DC-to-DC power supplies provide power to each of the ports and give us port-to-port isolation. Finally, the circuit board uses strict spacing rules – we call these Isolation zones on the 3PCIOU2 isolation zones. Surges follow the path of least resistance, and a tiny gap between traces is an easy path for surges to reach the delicate computer bus, bypassing expensive isolation components entirely. B&B Electronics solves RS-485 problems for electric company When it’s 41C degrees in the shade, customers get cranky without their air conditioning. Telephone Modems Specialty Converters Salt River Project (“SRP”) supplies power to the rapidly growing suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona and outlying areas. As one of the fastest growing counties in the USA, the area's electrical grid is constantly and rapidly expanding. Different Substations, Different SCADA Systems The substations in SRP’s grid use SCADA systems supplied by different vendors. Ongoing communication glitches by these various SCADA designs, were a source of stress and concern for SRP for years. These erroneous data errors and trouble reports threatened to mask reporting of real problems in the substations. Not helping was the fact that almost every SCADA vendor had implemented different circuits and recommendations on how to wire, ground, bias and terminate their RS-485 ports. It's certain that all these vendors make great controls, relays, breakers and switches, but that doesn't mean that they have an in-depth knowledge of RS-485. It’s no wonder that SRP had difficulty getting their systems communicating together reliably despite plenty of study, including the extensive B&B Electronics technical library at www.bb-europe.com. SRP engineers have enough to do without worrying about glitches in their SCADA equipment. And serial communication isn't their business, but it is B&B Electronics business! A Phone Call to B&B Electronics for Help An SRP technician contacted B&B Electronics and explained their dilemma. So, an engineer from B&B Electronics made a house call. After B&B Electronics reviewed additional RS-485 concepts with an SRP crew, some lab testing validated that those concepts could be measured with a meter and scope out in the field. 230,000 Volts: Do NOT Touch! If every shelf in a fine-china shop has a “do not touch” sticker on it, you think you’d see a lot more warning labels inside a 230,000 Volt substation. Our engineer wasn't offended in the least when an SRP guy reminded him not to lean on the rack 8 inches behind as he probed RS-485 data signals with a scope. Problem Identified and Solved At the substation, signal levels were looked at and minor adjustments made to the termination and biasing. Making these tweaks was easier than ever since SRP had adopted B&B Electronics’ model 485DRCi converter with switchable biasing. Looking at the data on the scope revealed that there were some misbehaving relay slave nodes on the multi-drop RS-485 system. Some relays weren't replying to their polls consistently. There were seemingly random delays causing bus contention. Some follow-up calls to a relay manufacturer led to a software update - and the problem was solved. Call B&B Electronics today!
