Beneficiary : Grade VI pupils, Kinder to Grade V F. Duration : June, 2014 to March, 2015 G. Introduction : Vegetable gardening is a very rewarding endeavour. Ideally, this activity is undertaken in school to support school program needs and use vacant site and available resources to the fullest. In 2007, DepEd released Memo # 293 “Gulayan sa Paaralan” encouraging increase public awareness in health and nutrition especially among pupils, teachers and parents. The following year, Dep Ed Memo # 234, s 2008, which encouraged the planting of malunggay (moringa) trees in school was issued by then Secretary of Education Jeslie Lapuz which complemented “Gulayan sa Paaralan”. Malalinta Elementary School sustains these initiatives as it adopts containerized gardening and developed malunggay park. As a result, the said school garnered second and third place in the competition on the best implementer of Gulayan sa Paaralan and classroom gardening respectively. This is a search launched by the district in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (municipal level). In this light, the implementer embarked on an income generating project as a means of maintaining and sustaining the program. Most importantly funds were raised for the procurement of instructional materials, specifically educational DVD’s to enhance pupils learning and printer which is used for the reproduction of activity sheets and downloaded materials from the internet for the different subjects. H. Instructional Implications of Vegetable Gardening Instructional Implications of vegetable gardening are reflected in the different objectives taken from subject areas of science, math, english, nutrition, EPP, and hekasi. Conventional tests like quizzes, performance tests can be used to determine the effect of instructional implications of vegetable and malunggay gardening in the pupils learning. 1. Vegetable and malunggay garden can be used by the teacher as a laboratory of learning in teaching science and health lessons. Sample of Objectives: a. Identify living things and non-living things in a mini ecosystem b. Identify plant/plant parts used for food, medicine etc. c. Describe the characteristics of plants which help them adapt to their environment 2. It can be used to address important issues related to nutrition and environmental problems Objectives: a. Participate in campaigns and activities for improving/managing one’s environment The pupils can correctly identify the seeds of the vegetable before planting. Objectives: a. Natutukoy at nakikilala ang mga pananim mula sa tuwiran at di tuwirang pagtatanim It can be integrated in the value formation in the different subjects such as science, english, mathematics, filipino, hekasi, etc. Objectives: a. Nakalalahok sa mga payak at kapakipakinabang na gawain It can be used to support department thrust and projects in the mitigation of malnutrition as in Dep. Ed Memo No. 293 “Gulayan sa Paaralan” and Dep Ed memo # 234, s 2008, which encouraged the planting of malunggay (moringa) trees in school This can be used as one of environment intervention strategies by school organization such as Youth for Environment in School-Organization (YES-O) in climate change. Demonstrate commitment and concern in preserving/conserving the balance of life in the ecosystem Vegetable and malunggay gardening will influence the pupils in their willingness to taste vegetables. Practice ways of maintaining one’s health such as eating go, grow and glow foods Vegetable and malunggay garden activities which included planting, tending, harvesting, consuming garden-grown produce can be as avenue for the pupils to love doing work. Procedure 1. Conducted an orientation meeting with the pupils regarding the income generating project (see enclosed attendance sheet & pictures) 2. Requested permit for its approval & implementation in the division office. 3. Chose a site with sun, good soil and drainage and probably most important of all close to water. 4. Involved the pupils choosing the vegetables to plant and where they will be planted. 5. Planted crops that mature quickly. 6. Every pupil or in group have their own plot in the garden. 7. Planted extra vegetables for the unwelcome visitors. 8. Identified the tools needed in the garden preparation, planting and maintenance. 9. Started the digging of the vacant lot. Involve the parents. 10. Garden was divided into plots & planted assorted vegetables. 11. Undertook succeeding activities like weeding & mulching. 12. Harvested & marketed of the produce. 13. Market Vegetables provide the nutrients and vitamins the body needs when these vegetables are digested. Vegetables are also claimed to be a powerhouse of nutritional values. Hence, this Income Generating Project awaken the consciousness of the pupils in the effect of having a healthy dietary intake. In the marketing of the produce, the pupils maintained their grouping in the school garden. Each group harvested their own fruits/vegetable at 7:00-7:30 in the morning and sold of the same follows in the same place, school garden. Each group recorded the sales. The income generated was reflected in Table A. It has been a productive activity. Funds were raised from the proceeds of the project, thus the Grade VI class was able to buy educational DVD which enhances pupils learning, photocopying materials and a printer which is used for the production of activity sheets and downloaded materials from the internet for the different subjects. B. Technical Description The project is located at Malalinta Elementary School, Malalinta San Manuel Isabela. The seeds will be taken from the harvest of the last planting season and the rest will be bought outside. C. Organizational Management The project is headed by the adviser with the support of the pupils and HRPTA members. The cost of the project is shown in Table B. M. Summary The Income Generating Project entitled “Veggie for IM’s: Vegetable Production as Fund Source for Instructional Materials of Grade VI Class of Malalinta Elementary School” has been a success. It has also become a laboratory of learning for the teacher and the pupils, the parents and the barangay officials are inspired to have their own garden at home and the community park. Funds were raised in the procurement of the instructional materials, DVD and printer. All the grades and Teachers are supportive of this project and an evaluation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan in school-based was conducted twice to sustain the program. N. Conclusions The IGP is a showcase of hardwork by the adviser, pupils and parents. This will be a continuing program for Grade VI pupils in the succeeding years as shown by the result of the harvest. O. Recommendations It is recommended that another grade can also conduct an income generating project using containerized gardening if space does not warrant vegetable planting. The adviser while conducting a meeting with the parents informing them about the income generating project of Grade VI. The adviser while explaining the objectives of the project to the Grade VI pupils. t
