1. HP StorageWorks x500 Data Vault Competitive Q&A version 1.0809 2. List of Questions Covered HP StorageWorks x500 Data Vault Competitive Q&A version 1.0809 List of Questions Covered Basic Product Positioning: Customer and Market Competition Core Features Data Vault Storage Data Protection and the Data Vault Remote Access and the Data Vault Media Management Features 3. Basic Product Positioning: Customer and Market 1. What is a Network Attached Storage device? A Although the term Network Attached Storage (NAS) comes from the enterprise market, HP views the StorageWorks x510 Data Vault as a small business network attached storage device. A NAS product can be defined as a specialized file server that connects to the network with its own IP address1 and provides storage, backup, and file sharing to multiple PCs and devices like external hard drives. The exponential growth in digital content in the small office has spawned the need for a robust, dependable NAS solution. 2. Why do smaller and micro businesses need a Data Vault? A Small businesses are increasingly aware of the need to protect their critical business data. They understand that their growing dependency on IT requires them to consider equally robust solutions to larger companies, but proportionally in terms of cost and complexity. In addition, small businesses want to be able to access their content at any time, from anywhere, both inside and outside their office. What has been missing for businesses of ten or less employees is a simple and affordable solution for data protection, secure file sharing, and collaboration that requires no in-house IT resources. These are functionally the same tools that larger businesses and enterprises have access to through their IT departments. Now HP brings these enterprise-class tools to the small business at a cost any can afford – less than £600/€700 for the entry level devices. No one else offers such a simple to use package at such an affordable price. 3. What is the HP StorageWorks x500 Data Vault? 1 IP Address – IP stands for Internet Protocol. The IP Address is a unique ID number that identifies each computer and its location on the Internet in much the same way that a house number, street address and postal code positions a home or business. 4. A The HP StorageWorks x500 Data Vault is an easy-to-use NAS device that is based on the Microsoft Windows Home Server operating system. The Data Vault provides users with automatic backup of all networked client PCs and Macs, automatic organization of media (music, video, photos) across all of the clients, media streaming across the office network and the internet, photo sharing tied to popular social networking websites, remote access to files and virtually limitless storage expandability. 4. Who is the target market for the HP StorageWorks x500 Data Vault? A Primarily micro and small businesses with less than 10 employees and/or 10 or less client PCs (or Macs) that are networked without a file server. Funding allocated for IT purchases is less than £7,000/€8,000/$10,000 per year. The decision maker is the business owner likely to take advice from an IT consultant/VAR and be influenced by press and word of mouth. Typical businesses in this space would be: • Estate agents • GP surgeries, dental offices, health centres and small medical practices • Small financial, insurance and accountancy firms • Workshop manufacturing companies and warehouses • Independent architects • Restaurants and franchise businesses • Home based companies The IT equipment is either managed by the owner directly or by a volunteer employee. 5. Is this a stand-alone product announcement for HP or will there be more in this line? A The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault series will address the network storage needs of smaller businesses (10 or less employees)– a category that represents the greatest 5. percentage of businesses in major European markets. The need to protect small business data has been highlighted recently by small business losses in due to disasters and also new requirements from various compliance and data retention regulations of late. While the Data Vault is the only storage products for the micro- business we are discussing today, we plan to expand our product offerings in this category going forward. This expansion will be based on existing and emerging small business needs focusing on automatic, secure data protection, simplified sharing, collaboration, and offsite archiving of data and a superior user experience. HP StorageWorks products now span all levels of business needs. 6. How does the Data Vault fit into HP’s overall storage strategy? A HP offers storage solutions to meet a variety of corporate, business, and consumer needs. We are a major player in the enterprise storage market; this gives us the experience and knowledge to develop relevant, cost effective solutions for micro-businesses. With its powerful performance and reasonable price point, the Data Vault bridges the gap between the HP Media Smart Server for home users and solutions like the StorageWorks D2D and AiO for more businesses with more demanding storage requirements. 7. Why have you chosen to enter the market with the Data Vault and why do you feel HP can be successful? A Several converging trends make this the ideal time for HP to enter the micro business network storage market. Firstly, the needs of micro business for these services have been driven home by recent disasters and regulatory and compliance demands. Also, the need to share and collaborate to be competitive continues to grow. Finally, the dramatic reduction in disk drive prices allows us to offer a high performance hardware solution worthy of the HP StorageWorks reputation at a price all micro-businesses can afford. 8. Do you have any recent market data that backs up the assertion that smaller businesses need this kind of data protection solution? 6. A According to the initial results of the July 2009 IT Effectiveness Index™2, nearly 23 percent, or almost one out of four small businesses score a “D” or “F” grade when it comes to evaluating their IT effectiveness. Based on responses to an online survey that is a first in targeting the IT practices of small businesses, preliminary results show another 37 percent are barely maintaining their IT operations, scoring only a “C” grade. More than a third of organizations indicated they are understaffed or critically understaffed when it comes to IT expertise needed. “In many cases, the symptoms of mediocre or failing IT grades are displayed in a lack of security protection against cyber threats, an inability to prepare for or respond to incidents, as well as growing concerns about IT availability and unacceptable levels in downtime of IT systems. Preliminary study results, for example, show that only 23 percent have fully implemented an incident management process to restore systems in the event of a security breach or system shut down, and only 26 percent have fully implemented a disaster recovery and business continuity plan.” The IT Effectiveness Index, Mid-Year Report, July 2009 2 The IT Effectiveness Index is a benchmarking tool that measures the technology effectiveness of small- and medium-sized businesses throughout the world. It is sponsored by companies with a core interest in the SMB market, including Microsoft. 7. “Reinforcing the overall lack of best practices, the IT Effectiveness Index survey shows that more than 57% of businesses experienced some downtime of their IT systems, with one out of five companies reporting they had experienced significant or unacceptable downtime of their IT systems over the past year. This is particularly disturbing since many small businesses are web-centric and are competing online against larger companies with more staff and resources to help them avoid interruptions in service. Downtime for small organizations of 50 people or less can literally be a silent business killer when outages occur, reducing income and causing the loss of valuable customers.” The IT Effectiveness Index, Mid-Year Report, July 2009 “In addition, fully one-third of respondents thus far have indicated they consider their business unprepared or underprepared in their ability to anticipate IT problems or business issues before they occur. These results reflect a situation whereby many small business IT departments must devote considerable time and effort in a reactive mode of “putting out fires” and dealing with urgent issues. Combined with ever more limited resources, it’s perhaps not surprising that small businesses find it difficult to plan ahead or foresee surges in demand, and thus feel unprepared or underprepared to anticipate issues before they become problems.” The IT Effectiveness Index, Mid-Year Report, July 2009 8. Competition 9. Why would a customer select the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault over NAS storage products such as the Buffalo TerraStation or the Iomega StorCenter ix2? A A complete competitive comparison follows at the end of this document, but for now, here is a summary of the key benefits of the Data Vault over most of its competitors. As a full-fledged NAS solution, the HP HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault offers a more comprehensive and integrated solution than network storage products that use third party add-on software for backup, media streaming, etc. Key differentiators include: • WINDOWS HOME SERVER Based on Microsoft’s Windows® Home Server software, the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault is highly integrated with Windows clients and includes Windows® Media Connect media streaming functionality. This makes it easier to use than systems based on Linux or proprietary software. The Windows platform makes the Data Vault an extensible platform for new applications and services in the future. • COMPLETE, AUTOMATIC DATA PROTECTION For businesses with 10 or less PC and Mac clients, The HP Data Vault provides full system protection. The HP Data Vault automatically backs up each client every day without you having to manage the process once you have loaded the client software on each PC. For restore, the Data Vault is capable of a “bare metal” restore – i.e. a perfect clone copy of a lost system onto a fresh machine – or just individual file restoration. • SECURE REMOTE ACCESS Secure remote access to files stored on the Data Vault. Secure remote access to PCs and their applications on the office network (for remote computer access, the network computer must be running Windows® XP Professional, Media Center Edition 2005 or Windows® Vista Ultimate). 9. • POWERFUL BACKUP & RESTORE FOR APPLE MAC’s Data Vault has built-in support for Apple’s Time Machine application for Mac backup and restore (note – requires Mac OS X 10.5.1 or later). • USER ACCESS CONTROL AND AUTHENTICATION Access to shared file folders can be easily managed through a mouse click. Set “Read/Write”, “Read Only” or “No Access” privileges for each user, to each shared folder. Users login and authenticate, with a strong password, to access the HP Data Vault shared folders or PC applications through the device. • FOLDER DUPLICATION More sophisticated storage management with selective folder duplication. Folder duplication is superior to RAID in that you don’t have to duplicate information that doesn’t warrant being kept as a fail-safe. This makes better use of the storage space within the Data Vault. • EASE OF EXPANSION Plug and play with any off the shelf 3.5 inch SATA I or SATA II hard disk drive – unlike Buffalo which restricts you to proprietary Buffalo expansion. The HP Data Vault supports hot swapping of hard disk drives which means that to add capacity you do not need to power down the device. • MEDIA MANAGEMENT AND SHARING Automatic organization of media from all of the PCs on the office network. Media streaming to devices on the office network or remote devices (including PC’s, Macs and iPhone/iTouch iPod) on the internet. • COMPREHENSIVE VIDEO CONVERSION Media Conversion to an MPEG-4 format that allows for greater success in video playback. • PHOTO SHARING & SOCIAL NETWORKING Unique HP Photo Publisher and HP Photo Viewer features for secure and easy photo sharing right from your Data Vault, or through popular social networking websites. 10. 10. Why would a customer buy the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault, as opposed to reconfiguring an old desktop or building a Home Server from scratch ? A Although some tech enthusiasts may enjoy building their own NAS device, research shows that the majority of small businesses do not have the technical know-how or desire to build or reconfigure a computer in this manner. And in the end, they may find that the home-built system has shortcomings like low performance, consumes excessive power, is not cost effective, or combination of any of these in relation to the Data Vault. The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault is specifically designed to be an always-on device that is optimized for total cost, low power consumption, high performance for media streaming, automatic data backup, and file sharing on the home network and over the internet. Plus, the additional network, management and collaboratary features of the Data Vault make it vastly superior to using an external USB HDD drive for data protection. Core Features 11. How would someone in a small business actually manage the functions of the Data Vault? A The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault comes with a user friendly Control Centre for PCs and Macs that includes Browse, Tools, and Help & Support links in one view. This is in addition to the Windows Home Server Console, which provides additional administrative access to the Data Vault. There is also a remote access portal for the Data Vault which allows for remote access to the unit itself as well as any PCs on the same network, and from which the user can download files, stream media remotely, and publish and view photos over the internet. 12. What about backing up the Data Vault itself? HP has provided an add-in for the Data Vault that allows users to subscribe to Amazon’s S3 service. S3 is an online data storage 11. service offering a web based interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from any out of office location with an internet connection. Pricing is per GB stored and per GB transferred. The Data Vault provides links to the Amazon S3 Service to enable registration, and the HP developed UI for S3 allows for scheduling or backup now, selection of shared folders to be backed up, estimation of amount to be backed up and simple browse and restore features. Please note, this feature will not be available until November 2009 and will be delivered to existing customers via a simple software update, downloadable from the internet. 13. What capacity options are available for the Data Vault? A 3 versions: 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB models offered as standard. All versions expandible using off the shelf 3.5” SATA HDDs. Windows Home Server Drive Extender supports different drive capacities within the same Data Vault case or chassis (up to maximum limits) – i.e. combine an original 1 TB unit with a 2 TB drive upgrade to provide 3 TB total. For simplicity, however, the user only sees one total storage pool, hiding the underlying complexity of having multiple drives. 14. What processor is in the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? How much DRAM is included ? A Intel® Pentium® Processor E5200 (2.5GHz) as standard. PC2-6400 unbuffered DDR2 ECC 800MHz as standard. 15. Is there a RAID-0 option on the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A No, but this is not a disadvantage for smaller businesses. While RAID-0 does offer performance benefit in a local configuration, the performance benefit of RAID-0 cannot be realized on networked storage. Also, RAID-0 configurations increase the risk of data loss as a single hard disk drive failure results in a loss of all data on both hard disk drives. It is imperative that our customers’ data and media content is not compromised. Instead of RAID, the Data Vault uses a sophisticated technology that is part of the Windows Home Server software called ‘folder duplication.’ By default, shared folders on the Data Vault have 12. folder duplication ‘On’, and every file in that folder is written to two separate hard drives in the array. This shared folder level mirroring provides the first level of redundancy for information on the Data Vault. 16. What is Folder Duplication and why is it better than RAID for smaller businesses? Folder duplication works with both internal and external hard disk drives. Selected folder duplication is superior to RAID in that you don’t have to mirror those folders that don’t need duplication. Of course, you can choose to duplicate an entire system if you choose but this is not necessary if you just want to backup critical data. Ultimately, this solution utilizes hard disk drive space more efficiently and cost effectively. Unlike most RAID configurations in low-end (under $1,000) network storage products that require the entire array of discs to be of identical capacities, folder duplication technology allows you to add different or higher capacity hard drives as they become available without sacrificing space on the new drive for RAID. Simply put, you don’t have to create redundant copies of everything on a PC, just the options you specify. 17. Can the drives inside the Data Vault be partitioned? A No. Each Data Vault appears as one large volume of storage, not as separate drives. A useful feature of the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault is the flexibility to allow different size hard disk drives within the same unit. If the customer adds a second hard disk drive (HDD) of a larger capacity, they will be able to mirror the hard disks up to the size of the smallest disk drive and then the remaining space on the larger HDD will be available for additional non-mirrored storage. 18. What is Distributed File System (DFS) technology and does the Data Vault support it? A DFS allows administrators to group shared folders located on different servers by transparently connecting them to one or more DFS namespaces. When a user views the namespace, the folders appear to reside on a single, high-capacity hard disk rather than different servers in multiple locations. Users can 13. navigate the namespace without needing to know the server names or shared folders hosting the data. DFS is not yet a feature offered on the Data Vault, primarily because the Data Vault is aimed at smaller users with less sophisticated , peer to peer networks. As such, very few of these companies are likely to need Distributed File System. 19. What is Active Directory and does the Data Vault support it? A If you are a computer administrator for a large corporation or organization, you can easily update all end users computers with new software, patches, files, etc simply by updating one object in an Active Directory forest or tree. Without an active directory, most end users would have computers that would need to be updated individually and would not have access to a larger network where data can be processed and reports can be created. Active directories can be extremely technical and require lots of expertise to navigate, but they are essential to storing information and data on larger networks. The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault does not utilise Active Directory technology as this is likely to be beyond the needs of the vast majority of users. 20. What is Port Trunking and does the Data Vault support it? A Port trunking is a means of increasing bandwith on a network to cope with loading more effectively. As most Data Vault customers will be on Gigabit Ethernet and 100-Base T networks, they would be able to handle requests without the need for port trunking. Therefore, the Data Vault does not support this feature. Incidentally, this is why the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault only has one Ethernet port; competitor products that offer two Ethernet ports typically do so to facillitate the redundant port trunking feature. 21. Can multiple Data Vaults be daisy chained? A No. Additional capacity is added by adding hard disk drives. Two internal and two external drives can be connected at one time to the Data Vault. 22. Is it possible to network across offices or between two locations? A No, the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault series cannot be networked across multiple locations. 14. 23. How much power does the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault use when on 24/7? Do you anticipate that this will be a customer concern? A HP has strived to make the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault as energy as efficient as possible. If it is on for 24 hours a day, it will consume about the same amount of power as a mainstream PC. Our goal in product design was to balance the high performance needs of a multi-function device with power savings. Additionally, the HP can be configured for a predetermined daily ‘Sleep time’ and ‘Wake time’ in order to save energy. During this sleep time hard disk drives of the Data Vault are spun down, the fans are stopped, and the Data Vault is idle, drawing only 1 watt of power. You can also send a manual ‘Sleep now’ or ‘Wake server’ command to the Data Vault from either your Mac or PC. This power-saving feature makes the Data Vault the most efficient product in its class when compared to other competitors in independent testing by smallnetbuilder.com: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_nas/Ite mid,190/ 24. How many users can access the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault at once? A Maximum of 10 users plus a guest (for someone who brings their laptop to your office and wants to view content stored on the server – e.g. a trusted advisor, like an accountant, or a supplier who you want to share some information with). 25. Will all users be able to see all files, including colleagues’ data? A The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault administrator can set ‘Read/Write’, ‘Read Only’ or ‘No Access’ privileges for each user, to each shared folder. The Data Vault administrator also controls the remote access privilege for each user. This prevents any user from seeing any information to which they are not entitled – e.g. personnel records, financial information and other sensitive material. 26. Can you load typical office applications, or games onto the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault and share those among multiple PCs? What are add-ins ? 15. A No. One can get additional functionality on the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault through 3rd party add-ins, but it is not intended to be a general purpose application server. The Proliant ML 110 or ML 150 would be better options for small businesses seeking general file server capability. Some add-in examples that can extend the functionality of the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault are: • Whiist - create and administer web sites on your server • Wake on LAN - remotely start a computer on your network so that you can access it via Remote Desktop • uTorrent - download bit torrents directly to your server • TiVo Publisher for Windows Home Server - play your Music, Videos and Photos on any TiVo in the house. • Lobster Tunes - streams music from Windows Home Server directly to a Windows Mobile smartphone through WiFi or 3G. 27. How do you connect the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault to the office network? What other interfaces does it have? A The Data Vault connects directly to the router in your office through an RJ45 Ethernet port, and supports up to Gigabit Ethernet speeds. It also offers 4 USB 2.0 ports and one eSATA port for connecting additional external HDD storage to the Data Vault. Please note that the Data Vault cannot be directly attached to a PC or Mac. 28. Does the Data Vault offer wireless networking? A Although the Data Vault needs to be wired to your network router through an Ethernet cable, it supports both wired and wireless devices via your wireless router. 29. Can a printer with a USB connection be attached to the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? Will it act as a print server? A Windows Home Server does not support printer sharing so the Data Vault cannot act as a print server but this is not a major disadvantage because most printers today offer network 16. capabilities. Users can still share and access printers on the network, just like any other device, even without print server functionality. 30. What is the standard warranty for the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A Limited hardware warranty and software technical support for one year from the date of purchase. HP offers 24/7 “toll free” consumer support. 31. What features does the HP HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault offer for Mac users? A The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault is great for offices with both PCs and Macs. The Data Vault has Mac features, but needs to be originally set up and administered through the Windows Home Server Console on a PC. Please note that you need to be running Mac OS X 10.5 or later to use Data Vault with an Apple Mac system. The Data Vault looks like a network share to the Mac. It has a Control Panel for the Mac, which includes Browsing for standard shared file access, Tools, and Help and Support, all in one user friendly window. Media can be streamed to a Mac in the home or remotely. In addition, iPhone/iTouch users can download the HP iStream application and stream their media from their Server. Mac users can utilize the Photo Publishing and Photo Viewing applications, and can backup their Macs to the Server using Time Machine. The Data Vault also has a “Server for iTunes” feature whereby music on the Server can be accessed from each individual computer’s iTunes library. Note that the Data Vault does not count as one of the five authorized playback devices in iTunes. 32. What is Time Machine ? A Time Machine is an automatic backup program that is built right into Mac OS X 10.5 and later. Time Machine backs up your system files, applications, settings, documents, and media, and keeps snapshots of how the Mac looked on various dates in the past. With Time Machine you can restore individual files, complete folders, or your entire computer to any previous date. To do Time Machine backups to the HP StorageWorks x510 Data 17. Vault, just allocate disk space and ‘start’ the disk on the Server, select the Data Vault in Time Machine preferences, and turn Time Machine ‘on’. Disk space that is allocated to Time Machine is reserved in the Mac shared folder on the Server, and free server storage will be reduced by this amount. Time Machine backup to the Server is accomplished by emulating a hard drive destination. 18. Data Vault Storage 33. What is the storage capacity of the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A The Data Vault ships in three different standard configurations: a 1 TB (Q2050A), a 2 TB (Q2051A) and a 3 TB (Q2052A). In all three cases, expanding the capacity is extremely easy - either by adding additional internal SATA 3.5” hard drives or by connecting external drives to one of the USB ports (4) and/or eSATA ports (1) on the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault. 34. What is the storage capacity in terms of real world content ? A One terabyte (TB) of storage = • ~18,000 x 10 megapixel digital photos • 350 pictures per week for an entire year • ~2,800 hours x Windows Media lossless music (may be compressed but no bits dropped) • 116 days of unique music • ~500 hours x regular TV shows • ~70 hours of Hi Definition content • Record 3 x 1hour long TV shows for an entire season • Record every football game of one team for a season 35. What types of hard disk drives can one use for expanding the Data Vault? A Any off-the-shelf internal 3.5” SATA I or SATA II drive will work in the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault. Today, these SATA drives are typically 7200 RPM. Any external USB drive will work with the four USB ports. 36. Can the drives be partitioned or added as separate volumes ? 19. A Internal and external drives can be added as part of the main storage volume, or as part of a backup volume, in the Windows Home Server Console. When you add hard drives to the main storage volume it merely increases the size of the volume, but you cannot partition them. If you add an internal hard drive as a backup volume, you can backup the shared folders on the Data Vaut to this drive, through the “Computers and Backup” tab in the Windows Home Server Console. If you add an external hard drive for your Home Server backups, you can store the hard drive in a separate location for disaster protection. 37. Does HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault offer hot-swapping of drives? A You can remove a hard drive (both SATA and external USB drives) without powering down the system, but first you must “remove it” via the Home Server Console. Content is migrated off the hard disk drive to be removed; you will get adequate warnings if there’s not enough room on other hard disk drives for the content. The hard disk drive indicator on the unit pulses aqua, telling you it’s ok to remove the hard disk drive. You insert a new hard disk drive, then go to the Home Server Console to “add it” to your volume. The overall capacity increases, and the LED glows solid aqua to indicate that the storage has been added. 38. What if the master hard drive fails? A You can replace the master hard drive. The user has to go through user guide instructions accessible from the Control Center to populate the replacement master drive with HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault software. 39. What would happen to the files on my HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault if I had a power failure during a backup job? A The backup job would automatically be stopped and the result would be an partial backup. If the user has scheduled an automatic backup job, files not backed up will be backed up during the next job. 40. What would happen to my files if I had a power failure? 20. A During a power failure the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault will shut down. When power resumes and the user powers back up the Data Vault, the stored files can be accessed again. 41. Does the Data Vault support diagnostic emails? Is there a PC ‘health status’ feature with the software? A Currently the Data Vault does not issue diagnostic email alerts in case of an issue with a backup or a client PC. There is a health feature whereby the user will be notified of possible issues with the Data Vault itself. For example, the user will be notified via the DV monitor icon in the system tray for key issues such as when a drive is failing. 42. What type of indexing are we doing on our devices to help customers find their files quickly and efficiently? A The only indexing we currently do on the Data Vault series is the indexing of media files by the server software. The media server software indexes all the media files (if enabled) and broadcasts all the meta-data for UPnP media devices on the network. This enables very simple browsing by artists, albums, photo date taken, title, folder, etc. We don’t currently do any other file indexing on any of the three Data Vault models available in October. 43. How would HP’s Personal Media Drive and HP Pocket Media Drive (or similar products from other vendors) be used with the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A. The HP Personal Media Drive (PMD) and HP Pocket Media Drive can be connected directly to the Data Vault using any of the four USB ports available. The Data Vault does not have a PMD expansion bay. The value proposition of the PMD is centered on portability and mobility where as the Server hard drives are designed to be permanently attached. 21. Data Protection and the Data Vault 44. How does automatic PC client backup work on the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A Once you install the Data Vault client software on a PC, it will automatically be backed up to the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault without need for further intervention. This client software must be installed on each PC that you wish to include in the backup operation. The sophisticated Windows Home Server backup algorithm copies files, folders, and complete images of the PC hard drive. It can recognize the same file in two or more places, and will keep only one copy of the file, but with multiple pointers, in order to save storage space on the Data Vault. This is known as de-duplication. You can optionally customize the backup by selecting which volumes on the PC to backup, what files to exclude, the backup window, and the number of revisions to keep. You can also configure the Data Vault to automatically ‘wake up’ both the Data Vault and PCs, when a backup is about to start. 45. Can I change the backup routine used by the Data Vault? The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault provides the user with very easy to use settings for both simple and custom file level backup. The customer can setup backups to automatically run at different schedules such as weekly, daily or continuously. The software is loaded on each client PC and each PC owner can customize their own schedule. After an initial file is backed up, only changes are incrementally backed up from there. 46. Is it possible to have multiple PC images stored on the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A Yes, this is an advantage to having a HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault. It is of course common for small businesses to have multiple PCs and this device allows multiple PC images to be stored in a simple manner. 47. Does a PC that is being backed-up need to be turned on? How long does a back-up take? 22. A Yes, to ensure a successful back-up the PC must be turned on for that period of time. The time will, of course, depend on variables such as the type of system, PC processor, router and speed of network. The Data Vault can be set to automatically wake PCs on the network for the duration of their backup. 23. 48. Can the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault back up a computer connected remotely? A No. PCs must be on the local network (wired or wirelessly) to be backed up. It is possible to change the automatic backup schedule built into Windows Home Server to activate a backup at a more convenient time – i.e. if employees take their laptops home at night or visit the office infrequently. If individuals have not had a backup during the scheduled period, the system will give them a notification to tell them that their PC has not been backed up. 49. How do you backup the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault itself? A There are multiple ways to backup data on the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault. By default, shared folders on the Data Vault have ‘Folder Duplication’ set to “On”, which means that every file in that folder is written to two separate hard drives in the Data Vault. This shared folder level mirroring provides the first level of redundancy. You do not have to configure or worry about this process, however, as with Folder Duplication, the system takes care of this automatically. Additional internal or external hard drives can be added to the Data Vault as part of a separate backup volume and you can backup any shared folders on the Data Vault to this drive, through the “Computers and Backup” tab in the WHS Console. If you add an external hard drive for your Data Vault System backups, you can store the hard drive in a separate location for disaster protection. The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault can also be backed up to the Amazon S3 online data storage service. The system provides links to the Amazon S3 Service to enable registration and use. Please note this service is not available until November 2009 and requires a separate subscription. Existing customers will receive a software update via the internet. Lastly, you can selectively backup files to an external hard drive, CD/DVD or HP StorageWorks DAT or LTO tape device that is connected to one of the PCs on the network. 24. 50. If my PC hard drive crashes, would it be possible to re-image a new hard drive and recover the computer using the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A Yes, The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault automatically backs up the PC hard drive image and can save multiple versions. It also comes with a PC restore CD, and after replacing the failed PC hard drive, you merely insert the CD into your PC, and pull the desired hard drive image from the Data Vault – a so-called ‘bare metal’ restore. If your computer has been corrupted by a virus, malware, spyware etc., you can re-image your hard drive to a known good state by bringing back an older version of the hard drive image from the Data Vault. 25. 51. What type of security does the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault have? A The Data Vault includes several security measures. The person responsible for looking after the system assigns a user name and password for up to 10 users plus an additional pre-defined Guest user account. Remote access is disabled by default and must be enabled for each of the user accounts. The Guest account is not enabled or given access to any shared folders by default. Remote access to the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault for file access, media streaming and accessing HP Photo Publisher is handled through 128 bit https only. Users must login and authenticate to access the Data Vault shared folders or PC applications through the system. 52. Does HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault have encryption? A The Data Vault doesn’t include encryption as part of the solution, but users can use their own software encryption solution on the unit. 53. Does the Data Vault have a built-in firewall? A Users of the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault should have a router with built-in firewall protection. Additionally, the Data Vault is built on the proven technologies of Windows Server and uses the software firewall technologies built into Windows Home Server to provide an additional level of protection. Also, Windows Home Server manages opening a port in the firewall for remote access in a secure fashion. 54. Does the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault offer server Anti-Virus software? A There is a McAfee Anti-Virus software add-in for the Data Vault, which the customer can choose to install to the unit. The anti- virus solution is offered as a 3 month free trial after which you must may a low cost subscription fee to ensure your virus definitions remain up-to-date. The customer can also either use their existing PC anti-virus software to scan the Data Vault, or there are 3rd party server anti-virus add-ins from companies including F-Secure. 26. Remote Access and the Data Vault 55. Why would someone choose to use the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault for remote access rather than an on-line portal such as gotomypc.com? A Online portals charge a monthly fee and provide access to only one PC at a time. Secure remote access is free (for at least one year) with the Data Vault and provides access to all of the content on the unit, and to individual PCs with remote desktop capabilities. HP offers an attractive and user friendly UI for remote access. 56. How does the Data Vault ensure secure remote access? A Remote access to the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault and it’s applications is through 128-bit secure https session only. Upon installation, you are given three options for setting up a secure, personal web address. The web address can be used for remote access to shared folders and computers and by visitors to HP Photo Viewer. The three options are: 1. Register for a web address from TZO.com (e.g., https://yourname.hphome.com) that is free for the first year, then costs a nominal fee per year. 2. Upgrade to your own custom domain name from TZO.com (e.g., https://yourname.com) for a cost-competitive fee. 3. Register for a free Microsoft Live web address. TZO domain names provide additional value beyond the Microsoft Live option. Some broadband ISPs block Port 80 which is required for easy remote access. The TZO service allows you to obtain easy remote access even if Port 80 is blocked. With the Microsoft domain name, if you don't already have a Microsoft Live account, you'll have to set that up. And with the TZO custom domain name option, you can get your own domain name (e.g., smithfamily.com). 57. How many computers can simultaneously access the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault over a remote connection? 27. A There’s no limitation set by the Data Vault. You may be limited by the bandwidth of your broadband provider and their access policies. 28. 58. Does remote access work with all web browsers (e.g. Firefox, Safari)? A Remote access to files will work with any browser. For the HP Photo Webshare, the user experience will be improved if using Microsoft Internet Explorer. For Mac users, they would need to use an appropriate browser such as Firefox or Safari. 59. What are the supported operating systems for PC and Mac clients ? Supported Client Operating Systems Windows Vista Windows XP Mac OS X Windows Vista Home Windows XP Home with Mac OS X 10.5 Basic with Service Service Pack 2 (SP2) ‘Leopard’ or later Pack 1 (SP1) Windows Vista Home Windows XP Basic 64-bit with SP1 Professional with SP2 Windows Vista Home Windows XP Home with Premium with SP1 SP3 Windows Vista Home Windows XP Premium 64-bit with Professional with SP3 SP1 Windows Vista Windows XP Media Ultimate with SP1 Centre Edition 2005 with SP2 and Rollup 2 Windows Vista Windows XP Media Ultimate 64-bit with Centre Edition 2004 SP1 with SP2 29. 60. Media Management Features 61. Does the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault work as a media server (using, for example, UPnP protocol to serve files to a digital media receiver hooked up in your entertainment center)? A By default Windows Home Server provides the Windows Media Connect media streaming protocol, a superset of UPnP AV 2.0. Unlike Linux-based NAS products, the Data Vault provides media streaming for downloaded “Hollywood” movies. What this means is that you can order a movie from your PC or TV that is connected to your network, and the movie can be downloaded to the Data Vault and streamed to your TV without having to keep the notebook powered up. 62. What is the Twonky Media add-in ? A Twonky Media is delivered as an installable add-in on the Data Vault, and provides enhanced media streaming functionality over the default Window Media Connect streaming. It will enable DLNA 1.0 certified, DLNA 1.5 compliant and UPnP media streaming from the Data Vault to a variety of entertainment devices in the office. Twonky Media provides: • Album art when browsing to music folders on the Data Vault using a DMR (digital media receiver) like the Xbox 360, PS3, HP MediaSmart Connect or others. • Picture thumbnails when browsing to picture folders on the Data Vault using a DMR. • Support for a wider range of media file types like m4a, mp4, ogg for Music; and Divx, MPEG-4, vob for Video • You can now choose alternate folders from which to stream content, and you aren’t limited to Photos, Video or Music file folders. Twonky Media is the engine behind the remote media streaming capabilities of the Data Vault, and comes as a pre-installed add- 31. in. You can stream photos and music to computers on the internet. 32. 63. What kind of performance can I expect from the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault for media streaming ? A Performance is dependent on the environment and network configuration which will vary from user to user. Depending upon the network environment, the Data Vault is capable of handling multiple streams of high-definition (HD) video. 64. What is the best way to load owned DVDs onto the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A Loading traditional commercial DVD’s to the server would require decryption of the content protection which is illegal. However, the new High Definition optical formats (HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc) both have a “Managed Copy” provision that should in the near future enable customers to legally make a copy of the disc or load the movies onto a central NAS device like the Data Vault. 65. How does this product complement/work with other HP entertainment devices (e.g., HP MediaCenter PC, HP TouchSmart PC)? A The HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault is the ideal partner for any computer in the office including standard desktop and notebooks PCs as well as entertainment computers such as the Media Center PC. 66. What is the Media Collector and how can I use it to manage multimedia files on my Data Vault? A The HP Media Collector on the Data Vault copies media files from the PCs in your network and organizes them on the server. This feature is ideal for creative businesses or agencies that may wish to have a central repository for all stock design elements, video and images. 67. How does the HP Media Collector work ? A The HP Media Collector copies media files from the computers in your network and organizes them on the server. This is a separate feature from the automated PC backup functionality included in Windows Home Server. The user can select which 33. PCs on the home network to scan and set Media Collector to check for new media hourly, daily, or weekly. You can individually enable collection for Photos, Music, or Videos, and collected media can be organized as follows: • Photos - by date or existing structure • Music - by artist/album or existing structure • Videos - copy to the server HP Media Collector intelligence attempts to avoid copying duplicate content, and also copying images like album art as a regular photo. HP recommends that the user enable the Guest account and give the Guest account full permission to the Photos, Music, and Videos shared folders; this ensures that Media Collector always has access to all shares. 68. How do the HP Photo Publisher and HP Photo Viewer applications work? HP Photo Viewer is an easy way to share photos and video clips with colleagues or clients directly from the HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault. Photo albums can be shared by cutting and pasting the URL of that album into an email. The albums can be viewed in a slideshow or a filmstrip mode, and viewers can easily download pictures from Photo Viewer. With a login you can administer the photo albums and can delete or rename them. The Photo Publisher links to Facebook, Flickr, Picassa, and HP Snapfish. In each case, the customer will need to create and/or log in to their account on the 3rd party website, and then HP Photo Publisher will manage uploading photos or videos to those sites. 69. What is the Video Converter and how does it work on my HP StorageWorks x510 Data Vault? A The Data Vault automatically converts your library of videos (including unprotected DVDs) for your viewing enjoyment. It can also create a mobile version of your videos that you can download and play on your iPod, iPhone, PlayStation®Portable (PSP®) and other popular mobile devices. The video converter will convert most popular video formats to an MPEG-4 video file (using an H.264 video codec and AAC stereo audio codec) with both original and mobile resolutions. 34. The original, high resolution file will stream to most devices attached to your home network including PCs, Macs and gaming systems. The mobile resolution version of the video will stream remotely to your PCs, Macs and iPhone/iPod touch. Supported video file types for conversion include: AVI (DivX, Xvid, MJPEG), MOV (MJPEG), DVR-MS (MPEG-2), MP4 (MPEG4), WMV and unprotected DVD VOB. Unprotected DVD .vob files are automatically stitched together resulting in an original quality and mobile quality MPEG-4 (h.264) version of the DVD. Copy protected (CSS) .vob files cannot be transcoded. Your original source video files are left completely intact after conversion, allowing you to archive them or re-convert them at a later date. Most Digital Camera video clip formats are supported for conversion. 70. What is the output format of the video converter? A MPEG-4 video file using an H.264 video codec and AAC stereo audio codec 71. Does it support 5.1 audio (AC3)? No, it will only support AAC stereo at this point. HP designed around the typical customer use case of home video or camera video pics. In most cases, these recordings will have originally been recorded in stereo. 72. Can you provide more specifics on the output of the video converter? The video converter can convert files to two resolutions – high (original) quality and mobile quality. For high quality, we attempt to auto match the source media type and source video resolution (ie. 16:9 or 4:3). The auto match may not create an exact but instead a scaled copy since the H.264 may allow for a smaller file size. The audio sample rate is left unchanged. The video bit rate is conterted to 192 Kbps. Mobile quality files are in QVGA (320x240) resolution. The video output bit rate is 256 Kbps at 18 frames/second and audio is 96 35. Kbps. This output quality allows for a streamable resolution via the iStream application and/or the HP Media Streamer. 73. Regarding the video file types supported for conversion. What are the typical sources of these file types? A The following table provides more information on the most common formats the Video Converter supports. A customer would want to check their specific device to understand in what format their video is output. In addition, there a many, many formats and this list is not meant to be exhaustive. If there is a need for more specifics our support team will have a comprehensive list. This table is for QA purposes and is not recommended for publishing external.
